Why Bet On Philadelphia (-2.5) To Beat Atlanta

In Chip We Trust

Chip Kelly’s offense looked unbeatable during the NFL Pre-season. Kelly was much maligned during the off-season because many players, including LeSean McCoy, implied that Kelly was somewhat racist. Although all of those rumors appear to be unfounded, Kelly didn’t really address the issue.

Instead, he sent out an offense during the pre-season that rocked every defense that it faced. Versus Indianapolis in the first NFL pre-season game, Kelly’s offense scored 36 points even though starting QB Sam Bradford didn’t play. In the second pre-season game Kelly’s offense scored 40 points against Baltimore. Philly running backs averaged a ridiculous 6.3 yards on the ground. The offense rushed for 238 yards. In the third pre-season game, Bradford went 10 out of 10 for 121 yards. He threw 3 touchdown passes against a decent defense at Green Bay. The Eagles rushed for only 87 yards, but starter DeMarco Murry rushed for a 4.7 average.

If the Eagles’ offense plays as well in Week 1 against Atlanta as it did during the pre-season, it’s difficult to see Philadelphia not winning this game by at least 7 to 10 points. That’s how good the Eagles’ offense is.

Why Bet On Atlanta To Beat Philadelphia (-2.5)

Defensive minded head-coach Dan Quinn will have a big test in week 1

Atlanta hosting Philadelphia is actually one of the more interesting games of Week 1. Philadelphia is led by an offensive genius in Chip Kelly. Atlanta’s new head coach, Dan Quinn, is considered a defensive genius in many NFL circles.

Quinn comes over from the Seattle Seahawks where he coached one of the greatest defenses in the history of the NFL. Quinn’s leadership has already paid dividends for the Falcons. In the first quarter of their first pre-season game, the Falcons forced QB Marcus Mariota into a fumble and an interception in his first ever 2 series in the NFL. The first team D dominated the New York Jets in the first quarter of that pre-season game while the defense stopped Miami’s offense from scoring in the first quarter of that game. If Quinn can get Atlanta’s defense to step it up against Kelly’s offense, the Falcons might have a shot to win this game as a home underdog.

But the problem with stopping Philly’s offense is that it isn’t one-dimensional. If Quinn puts 8 men in the box to try and stop the run, Bradford will exploit Atlanta’s secondary. If Quinn decides to rush only 4, DeMarco Murry should be able to dominate on the ground. Unless Quinn finds the magic formula to stopping the Eagles, Philly should put up enough points in this game to win and I am picking them to cover the 2.5-point spread. My final score prediction is Philadelphia 42, Atlanta 31
