Five Reasons To Bet The Over At Super Bowl XLVIIIRachel Garcia
Whether you bet the over on Super Bowl XLVIII, or prefer the under, basically comes down to personal preference. The total for the Super Bowl opened at 47.5 but has shaded downwards because people are legitimately nervous about Manning against Seattle’s top-ranked defense. Should you heed those concerns or root for touchdowns? Read on to find out.
Five Reasons To Bet The Over At Super Bowl XLVIII
1. It’s Peyton Manning For Goodness Sakes
Peyton has thrown 7 touchdowns in a single game. He’s posted the first ever 5,000+ and 50+ touchdown season by a quarterback. I know that Seattle has a great, statistical defense, but the Broncos devoured the NFL this year with 457.3 yards per game and a mind numbing 37.9 scoring average. If they come anywhere close to their statistical averages from this year, the Broncos will only need Seattle to chip in around 10-14 points to hit the low hanging 47.0 point total. If you were looking for a great reason to bet on the over at Super Bowl XLVIII, you don’t have to look that much farther than Peyton Manning. It’s his year. Just admit it already.
2. Denver Went 11-5 O/U This Season
You probably know that Denver was a beast against the total this year. What you may not know is that they were held to a game total of less than 47.0 points just once during their Week 11 matchup against Kansas City. Pretty insane right?
The problem is that the playoffs have been a bit of a different story. The end score of their games against San Diego and New England both totaled just 41.0 points. That might make those of you that want to bet the over at Super Bowl XLVIII a little scared, but the next two points will invigorate your faith.
3. Can Seattle Stop Denver’s Hurry-Up Offense?
One of the biggest takeaways from the Niners-Seahawks game was…well it was the takeaway at the end by Sherman that sealed the game. But leading up to that ill-advised throw, Kaepernick was leading a hurry-up offense that had Seattle scrambling. Those that bet the over at Super Bowl XLVIII, have to hope that Denver’s offense will get rolling. And if they do, it will be because Peyton’s execution of the no-huddle and the hurry-up are almost perfect. If you don’t give Seattle the opportunity to set their imposing defense, there’s a chance you can beat them. The Niners almost did at the end of the NFC Championship. Denver should be pouring on a fast tempo throughout Super Bowl XLVIII.
4. Seattle Can Explode Offensively
If you just assume that Denver has a fairly average defense (because they do), then it’s important to remember that Seattle is very capable of putting up big points when given the opportunity. Seattle has scored season highs of 45 against Jacksonville and 41 against Minnesota. Now, neither of those defenses were that good, but Seattle also dropped 34 on New Orleans and eviscerated San Francisco’s defense for 29 in the regular season. Seattle doesn’t routinely drop a huge amount of points, but they’re also the ninth most efficient scoring offense with 26.1 points per game this year. To put it simply, you shouldn’t ignore Seattle’s offensive potency if you choose to bet the over at Super Bowl XLVIII.
5. Chasing Overs Is More Fun
Let’s consider the state of mind you’ll be in at the Super Bowl: you’ll probably be drinking surrounded by a bunch of friends and family. No one likes the guy who cheers for field goals and fist pumps wildly every time there’s a punt? If there’s ever a reason to bet the over at Super Bowl XLVIII it’s because you want to see touchdowns.
