Historical Super Bowl Betting Trends Heading Into Super Bowl 48

It maybe a cliche, but I can’t resist. And then there were two.

After 17 bone crushing regular season games and another three epic weeks of playoff games, the two best teams in the NFL will meet for the Vince Lombardy trophy at MetLife Stadium on February 2nd.

With their victories in the AFC and NFC Championship Games, the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks have set the card for the 48th edition of football’s greatest spectacle.

With the Super Bowl 48 betting spread already bouncing from one side to the other, this maybe the most competitive and balanced matchup to grace the final game of the NFL season in recent history. Here is a quick look at the historical Super Bowl betting trends, records and betting results that might make the difference between a winning and losing bet.

Super Bowl History Betting Trends:

  • The NFC currently has a 25-22 edge over the AFC straight up in the first 47 Super Bowl matchups. The Pittsburgh Steelers have the most Super Bowl wins with 6; the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers both have 5.
  • The Steelers and the Cowboys have the most Super Bowl appearances amongst all active franchise with 8. Pittsburgh have been favorites six times, and the Cowboys five times.
  • The biggest spread differential was in Super Bowl XXIX as the 49ers were an 18.5 point favorite over the Chargers. San Francisco ended up winning 49-26 and covering by five points.
  • Overall 26 favorites have covered the spread, 17 the underdogs, and there were two push (1997 & 2000).
  • Starting in 2000, just four favorites have covered the spread against eight underdogs along with one push.
  • The underdog has covered the spread in five of the last six Super Bowls. Green Bay was the only favorite to cover in that span beating the Steelers 31-25 as a 3 point favorite in Super Bowl XLV.
  • The NFC teams are 5-1 against the spread in the last six Super Bowl; that only loss came as the 49ers couldn’t cover the spread against the Ravens in 2013.
  • The game total record is currently: 23 over-23 under. Super Bowl I didn’t have a game total line.
