Analyzing The Houston Texans Vs Dallas Cowobys Spread, My ATS Pick & How To Watch
Analysis: The Dallas Cowboys will look to avoid a winless preseason when they host a Houston Texans team that has been as stingy as any defense in the league throughout the 2015 preseason.
The Cowboys will turn to veteran backup quarterback Brandon Weeden before giving way to third-stringer Dustin Vaughn – and therein lies the problem for Dallas. Their backup quarterbacks are mediocre at best.
In the case of Weeden, Thursday’s preseason clash will be his first action since suffering a concussion on Aug. 23 against the San Francisco 49ers. Dallas will likely give the veteran the lion’s share of snaps in this meaningless preseason finale.
“That’s the plan unless something changes between now and then,” Weeden said. “Still a few things we’ve got to do. But I feel better than expected.”
Despite the time off, Weeden told reporters he feels fine.
“Arm’s fresh because I haven’t thrown very much, which is really good,” Weeden said. “I think as far as schematically I feel good just because I tried to do as much as I can back there when Tony and those guys are out there. Maybe timing and stuff like that, a little bit. But once you get throwing and throw a couple of routes in there, you kind of get that back.”
With or without Weeden, Dallas has not looked very good this preseason in scoring just 27 points through three games while giving up 28 points to Minnesota in their last outing alone.
Conversely, the Houston Texans are looking like a great candidate to improve upon the nine wins they recorded last season. The Texans beat New Orleans 27-13 in Week 3 to bounce back from their narrow 14-10 home loss against Denver in Week 3.
Better yet, the Texans got solid performances out of both of their top two quarterbacks, Brian Hoyer and backup Ryan Mallett, who has his best outing of the preseason the last time out.
Mallett will get the start in this one and there’s reason for hope after he led the Texans on a 16-play touchdown that was by far, his best series of the preseason.
The No. 1 thing you need to know about this all-Texas pairing is that the Houston Texans haven’t given up more than 14 points in any of their three preseason games while Dallas has not scored more than 14 in any of theirs. Despite being on the road, Houston wins outright as they really go for the ‘W’ while playing Hoyer a bit longer than most teams play their starters.
Betting Trends: The Texans are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four road games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games overall. I know the Dallas Cowboys are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games in September, but they’re also 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
I pick the Houston Texans to win outright by a score of 24-17 over Dallas.
