Bet The New England Patriots -3 Because…
The Patriots turn it on during the playoffs. After New England lost its last 2 regular season games, football handicapping doubters could have been forgiven for jumping all over the Kansas City Chiefs at +5 in the AFC Divisional Round. KC had won 11 straight games. They appeared to have the defense that could stop New England’s offense. But the Patriots beat the Chiefs by 7 points, 27 to 20, to secure their position in the AFC Championship. New England just knows how to turn on the switch when it needs to. Brady carved up the KC defense with 302 yards and 2 TD passes. They scored 27 points against a defense that had allowed 20 points or more only twice in its past 13 games.
Bet The Denver Broncos +3 Because…
Denver beat New England during the regular season with Brock Osweiler at QB. They should have no trouble keeping it close with Peyton Manning under center. Was Peyton Manning great versus Pittsburgh in Denver’s 23 to 16 win in the AFC Divisional Round? Heck, no! I don’t think he was even good. But, what he did do was play smart. Peyton is very good at calling the right audible plays. He can also hit the short wide receiver. It becomes an issue when Peyton tries to stretch the field with 60 yard passes, which he just doesn’t have the strength to throw any more. Manning’s instincts is what Denver needs to win. If they get Peyton playing with his instincts, they’ll have a shot.
Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
Tom Brady and the New England Patriots look awfully tough in this game. The fact of the matter is that Denver’s defense only allows 83.6 rushing yards per game. New England is going to pass the ball more than it runs it. But, let’s put that into perspective. Is a 4 yard pass down the field to Edelman cutting across the defense a pass or rush?
Technically, it’s a pass. For New England, that’s how they run the football. Expect the Patriots to make short passes to both Edelman and Amendola before unleashing the throws down field. If the Patriots had any semblance of a rushing attack, they’d be a touchdown favorite in this. As it stands, they’re only a 3 point favorite.
Speaking of New England’s lack of a rushing attack, is that enough of a reason to back Denver to win straight up? In my mind, it is. The Broncos’ defense is the absolute best in the NFL. It holds opponent’s to an average of 199 passing yards per game. The Broncos have the necessary players to play man on Gronk and Edelman with a floating zone player shifting to Gronk if he goes 10 yards down the field before Brady throws the ball. Plus, this Denver defense has already seen Tom Brady this season.
Plus, Denver’s offense might find a way to open up running lanes for both Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson. Going against Bill Belichick and Tom Brady usually is dumb, and maybe after this game, I’ll look stupid. But, I can’t help but feel that Denver might pull off the upset. I’m going with the Broncos.
My final score prediction is Denver 27, New England 24 .
