Kaepernick Vs. RGIII Highlight Monday Night Football Betting

The story for this Monday Night Football betting matchup is pretty simple, and I’m pretty excited to hear ESPN MNF analyst Jon Gruden rave about the two quarterbacks featured in this contest. From a gambling standpoint, however, it’s impossible to bet against San Francisco in this one. They are not a perfect team by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re also missing some very important pieces. The fact remains that the Niners are built to withstand injuries and as long as Colin Kaepernick is at the helm, they’ll always have a chance.

If you asked me to choose between Kaepernick and RG3, it would be a simple choice because the Niners’ franchise is being built around a guy who never seems to get hurt. Kaepernick is having a challenging season, but he’s stepping forward in his evolution as a player. In the meantime, he’s buoyed by one of the best overall defenses in the NFL. The Niners just limited the Panthers to 10 points and the Saints to 23 at home. Keeping Washington out of the endzone should be a piece of cake by comparison.

What’s important to remember about the Redskins is that they weren’t that good last year, In fact, they might have been one of the luckiest teams in the NFL during the 2012 campaign. The Redskins started the year 3-6 SU before rampaging on a seven-game winning streak to end the regular season. It was easy to get caught up in the hype because they were so fun, but they also went 5-4 SU in 9 games that were decided by a touchdown or less.

This year they’re not even keeping games close. They were just pantsed by the Eagles in a 16-24 loss where RG3 looked terrible, and before that they were chased from behind by a hapless Minnesota team during a 27-34 loss. They’re scoring an average of 24.6 points per game, but are allowing 31.1 against. Basically, they’re just not winning the nail biting thrillers that they were last year. The luck has run out for RG3 and Washington. Now they have to try and win football games on the merits of skill and coaching.

Washington simply hasn’t put together a season worth remembering. They seem to be throwing hail mary’s on every play. There’s very little rhyme or reason to the things they do because they lack big playmakers in the passing game. RG3 has battled through so much scrutiny and physical pain this year that he hasn’t taken the time to actually develop as a quarterback. That has as much to do with Mike Shanahan as it does with RG3 doing his homework. If RG3 isn’t putting this team on his shoulders in the dying minutes of a game, the Redskins can’t find ways to get wins.

And that’s the difference here. Even when Kaepernick doesn’t play well, the Niners have enough weapons – namely Justin Smith and that ridiculous defensive line – to be competitive no matter what. San Francisco just faced two of the best teams in the NFC in the past two weeks. Facing one of the worst will be a welcome relief, and allow them to find their footing yet again. San Francisco has lost to Seattle, Carolina, New Orleans and Indy. Those teams are all headed towards the post season.

If we know anything about San Francisco, it’s that they’re worthy of a playoff spot and they absolutely love beating up on bad teams. Don’t worry about them being Monday Night Football betting favorites on the road because San Francisco has a +19.8 point differential when they win games. I still expect this to be a fun game, but don’t get clever by thinking Washington has any tricks up their sleeves worth banking on.
