Why Bet On Detroit To Beat San Diego (-2.5)
Detroit’s QB Matthew Stafford appears to be set for a huge season, if he can take his Megatron blinders off. And when he does, the Lions will make for a great NFL bet all season long. Stafford looked great during the NFL Pre-season. He went 2 of 2 for 57 yards, a 28.5 average, and a TD versus the Jets in the first pre-season game. Stafford followed that performance up with a 6 out of 8, 78 yards performance versus Washington, and then he threw for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns when going 11 out of 15 for Jacksonville.

The key for Stafford and the passing game will be how well WR Calvin Johnson bounces back from his sub-par 2014 season. Stafford has great rapport with Johnson and he developed great rapport with Golden Tate last season. If he and Johnson are clicking in this game, San Diego’s pass defense has little chance of keeping Detroit from scoring a ton of points in this matchup.
The Chargers’ pass defense didn’t look terrible during the pre-season. The problem is that it played against teams that aren’t close to having the weapons that Stafford has in this Week 1 matchup. Expect the Lions to lean heavily on Stafford, Johnson, Tate and the rest of the passing attack in this game.
Why Bet On San Diego (-2.5) To Beat Detroit
QB Phillip Rivers at San Diego is easily one of the top passers in the league. He can win your NFL bets backing the Bolts on the strength of his arm alone. The trade so many years ago that sent Eli Manning to the New York Giants, because Eli’s father Archie didn’t want his son playing for San Diego, has worked out well for both organizations. The Giants have won 2 Super Bowls with Eli at QB while the Chargers got a franchise QB in Rivers.

But as good as Rivers is, he hasn’t benefited from a rushing attack since RB LaDanian Tomlinson, who ended his career as one of the best of all time, retired. Last season, the Chargers’ rushing attack was dreadful. They drafted RB Melvin Gordon from Wisconsin in April to help fix the running back situation. Gordon isn’t listed as number one on the depth chart, but he should get some carries in this game.
If the Chargers can exploit Detroit’s D, which doesn’t have Ndamukong Suh on the line any more since they traded him away to Miami, for 3.5 to 4 yards per carry on the ground, they could very well win and cover. A good rushing attack will set up Rivers for passes down field.
That’s what should happen in this matchup. Phillip Rivers has the ability to really put some point up versus a Detroit defense that has some flaws without Suh.
I am picking the Chargers on the money line, but do not bet them at -3. My final score prediction is San Diego 27, Detroit 24.
