Why Bet On Miami (-3) To Beat Washington

Wake + Grimes + Suh = ?

Miami’s defense is going to be very good this year. Like JJ Watt at Houston, Ndamukong Suh, whom the Dolphins signed away from Detroit during the off-season, demands to be double and sometimes even triple teamed. Suh is the best defensive lineman in the NFL. He makes everybody around him better.

With Suh along the defensive line, Miami can rush 4. What it means is that they can send their linebackers back into coverage, blitz a couple of players to mess with Washington QB Kirk Cousins’ timing, or simply stand their ground and play against the run. Suh allows the Dolphins’ defensive coaches to provide way more looks on defense and to instill many more blitz packages because he is so good at providing a big push once the ball is snapped.

The entire Miami defense will improve with Suh in the fold. The cornerbacks should get more interceptions and the linebackers should get more sacks. The fact that QB Kirk Cousins has just now become Washington’s starting quarterback might only help Miami’s D in this matchup.

Why Bet On Washington to Beat Miami (-3)

QB Kirk Cousins gives Washington the best chance of upsetting Miami.

That was annoying. For the entire off-season it was a weird waltz between Robert Griffin III and Coach Jay Gruden. RGIII is definitely our QB, Gruden kept implying. But, Gruden sent RGIII out there to get killed by Detroit during the pre-season. All of a sudden, due to RGIII’s concussion, Kirk Cousins is now the starter at Washington.

It makes sense. Owner Dan Snyder favored RGIII, but the Heisman Trophy winner hadn’t been effective since injuring himself versus Seattle in a playoff game in his first season. Running quarterbacks, like Vince Young and RGIII, almost never pan out unless they learn to be drop back passers like Randall Cunningham did in the past and Russell Wilson has done now.

Although many fans may be upset, Kirk Cousins does give Washington the best chance at beating Miami in Week 1. Cousins isn’t a great quarterback yet, but he does have the tools to be a great quarterback. He needs to work on his decision making. A lot of that, especially in this game, has to do with how Coach Jay Gruden manages Washington’s offense versus Miami’s excellent defense. If Gruden sticks to the short passing game and runs the football with success, Cousins should be okay. If Gruden makes things too difficult for Cousins, he’ll throw some interceptions.

My guess is that Miami’s defense is just too good for Cousins to have enough success in this game for a Washington victory. It should be close, but Miami will win and that is what I am betting. My final score prediction is Miami 22, Washington 17.
