Why Bet On New Orleans To Beat Arizona (-3)

New Orleans’ passing game is in good shape even without Jimmy Graham.

The big deal during the off-season in the Big Easy was whether or not New Orleans’ passing game would be affected by the loss of Jimmy Graham. The Saints traded their star tight-end to Seattle for center Max Unger. Graham is easily the second best pass-catching tight-end in football after New England’s Rob Gronkowski. Recent reports out of New Orleans, as biased as they are, hint that the Saints brain-trust thought Graham was too soft for the big bucks.

So far, so good for the Saints passing game without Graham. Coach Sean Payton thought it was more important to protect Drew Brees who too often had to run for his life last season. Brees looked good in the pre-season. He went 8 out of 10 for 159 yards and threw 2 touchdowns versus New England. More importantly in that game, WR Brandin Cooks caught all 4 of his targets for 117 yards and a TD. Running back Mark Ingram caught all 3 of his targets from Brees.

Cooks and Ingram look well suited to be Brees’ replacement for Graham. If that becomes the case, the Saints’ offense might actually be more effective this season than last season. Unger has been great at Center. Brees faces one of the worst pass defenses statistically in the league from a year ago. If he’s on top of his game, the Saints could put up points in the desert.

Why Bet On Arizona (-3) To Beat New Orleans

Arizona’s defense will shut down the Saints’ rushing attack.

If the NFL Pre-season is any indication, Arizona’s terrific run defense is already in mid-season form. The Cardinals had one of the best rushing defenses in all of football last season. There’s no reason to believe that the Cardinals’ rushing defense won’t be as effective this season based on what they did during the pre-season.

The Cards held San Diego to 46 yards and a 2.0 average in an NFL Pre-season game. The defense dominated Oakland’s rushing attack in Arizona’s third pre-season game. It held the Raiders to only 37 yards rushing and a 1.8 average. In their fourth pre-season game, the Cardinals held Denver to only 49 yards rushing and a 2.0 average. If the Cardinals can keep the Saints from running the ball effectively, they’ll be able to put pressure onto Brees or play in a Cover 2. That could lead to a Cardinals victory and cover.

As good as the rush defense has been, the Cardinals’ pass defense doesn’t look particularly appealing. It allowed QB Derek Carr with the Raiders to throw for 213 yards. KC’s backup QB Chase Daniels went 17 out of 21 for 189 yards and 3 TDs. Brees could really exploit the Cardinals’ defense in this matchup.

I am picking this to be a high scoring affair, with the Saints winning the day. My final score prediction is New Orleans 37, Arizona 34.
