NFC West Betting Free Picks – San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals

The NFC West betting matchups this weekend are going to have a serious impact on the playoff picture, and the tilt between San Francisco and Arizona has perhaps the biggest implications. The Cardinals need a win and a New Orleans loss to steal the sixth seed, while the Niners can vault from the fifth seed to the first if Seattle loses to St. Louis. And this game is as nail biting close as it can get.

The thing is that San Francisco has absolutely cremated their competition in the last six weeks, going a polished 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS with a straight up loss to New Orleans and two failed covers against Seattle and Atlanta. In those matchups, they’ve been averaging a strong +9.8 point differential and also own a 32-20 victory over Arizona from earlier this year. As you’d expect with such a strong roster, there’s plenty to like about San Francisco.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals
The San Francisco 49ers (11-4) and the Arizona Cardinals (10-5) go head to head in Week 17.
Starts: 12/29/2013 4:20PM
University of Phoenix Stadium, One Cardinals Drive
Glendale, Arizona

The Cardinals, however, have been one of the most rock solid takes in the sportsbook for the last two months. They followed up their loss to San Francisco with a 22-34 defeat against Seattle, but have ripped off an incredible 7-1 SU and ATS run since. They’re also a blistering 4-0 SU and ATS in their last 4 games and are coming off a massive 17-10 victory in Seattle from last weekend. This Cardinals team is much better than the casual fan thinks, and have fought tooth and nail to put themselves in to their current position.

So betting on the Cardinals is anything but foolish. They’re deserving of your consideration in NFC West betting free picks, and would be one of my favorite upstarts on the board had the Honey Badger been healthy for this game. But if there was ever a time for the Cardinals to be in a letdown situation, it’s in a matchup like this. Having to play Seattle and San Francisco in back-to-back games twice this season was a slap in the face by the schedule makers and it’s something that I just don’t think Arizona can survive.

Do not underestimate how good this San Francisco team is. You can say that their five game winning streak has a lot to do with good luck, but they’re built to withstand slug fests. People seem completely enamored with the up-and-down production of Colin Kaepernick, but the truth is that this defense is what’s carrying this team down the stretch. Focusing on Kaepernick instead of looking at how fantastic the Niners are as a whole is like seeing the forest for the trees. And while Arizona is a great home team, these Niners travel very well and are 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 trips. This is going to be a barn burner of a game, but the Niners defense will rise to the challenge and make the visitors a reliable play.
