Why Bet On Oakland to Beat Cleveland (-3.5)
Mack & co will make McCown wish he had waited to suit up again.
Johnny Manziel played well starting in place of Josh McCown in Week 2. He led the Cleveland Browns to a 28 to 14 win over the Tennessee Titans. In the game, Manziel threw for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 8 of 15. The fact that he didn’t throw a pick has to be considered a victory for Manziel, whose off-field issues have been well-documented.

Manziel is back on the bench after McCown was cleared by docs. He faces a much different defense in Oakland than what he faced versus Tennessee. Oakland’s defense isn’t bad. Based on stats, the Raiders’ defense looks bad. It’s giving up 44.5 yards per game. Opponents are passing for 326.5 yards per. Opponents are rushing for 118 yards per. The Raiders are giving up 33 points per. Stats aren’t the only thing to study when handicapping a football game, though.
Oakland faced QB Andy Dalton and Cincinnati in Week 1. They faced QB Joe Flaaco and Baltimore in Week 2. Dalton and Flaaco are veteran quarterbacks that know how to play in this league. Flaaco has a Super Bowl ring while Dalton has some great weapons. Manziel isn’t close to being as good of a QB as either Dalton or Flaaco. The Raiders have a great shot of getting to McCown in this matchup.
Why Bet On Cleveland (-3.5) to Beat Oakland
Musical chairs under center.
Oakland’s offense has improved a lot from last season. The offense averages 347 yards per game. The Raiders score 25 points per game. While the rushing attack is so-so at 80 yards per, the passing attack is ranked in the Top 10 at 267 yards per.
Oakland QB Derek Carr has 2 excellent wide receivers in rookie Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. Cooper has caught 12 passes for 156 yards and 2 TDs. Crabtree has 14 catches for 148 yards and a TD. Carr’s QB rating is 94.9. Versus Baltimore in Week 2, Carr passed for 351 yards and 3 touchdowns. He threw only a single interception.
Carr, Cooper and Crabtree face a much better defense in Week 3 in Cleveland than they did in Week 2 versus Baltimore. Cleveland’s secondary led by corner Joe Haden is well-designed to shut down at least one of Oakland’s top wide receivers.

But that will leave the other wide receiver open. As good as Cleveland’s defense is stopping both Cooper and Crabtree seems difficult to do. Expect Oakland to win this one straight up. Bet the Raiders moneyline at +150. My final score prediction is Oakland 31, Cleveland 24.
