Bet The Oakland Raiders at +1 Because…
The Raiders (7-9 SU, 8-8 ATS) have tons of young talent and are expected to take a big step forward in 2016.
Everyone is expecting big things out of Oakland this season, but if the preseason is any indication, then everyone needs to put the brakes on for a bit. The Raiders went 1-3 in the preseason and ride a three-game losing streak into the regular season
Oakland has a gifted young signal-caller in quarterback Derek Carr and a pair of talented wide receivers in Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, not to mention an underrated running back in Latavius Murray. Still, the Raiders need to improve after ranking a modest 17th in scoring a year ago (22.4 ppg).
Defensively, the Raiders have a payer that could win the Defensive layer of the Year award in linebacker Khalil Mack, but they’re going to need better efforts from the rest of their defense after finishing 2015 ranked an uninspiring 22nd in points allowed (24.9 ppg).
Bet The New Orleans Saints at -1 Because…
The Saints (7-9 SU, 8-7-1 ATS) are playing at home and still have the best quarterback in this matchup.
New Orleans gave up almost twice as many points as they scored in losing all four of their preseason games and will apparently have to rely on their offense again to win games in 2016 just as they did a year ago.
The good news is that the Saints ranked a stellar first in passing and eighth in scoring (25.5 ppg) last season and still have a future Hall of Fame quarterback in veteran Drew Brees and a solid group of skill position players led by veteran running backs Mark Ingram and C.J. Spiller and receivers, Brandin Cooks and Michael Thomas.
Defensively, New Orleans needs to seriously upgrade a unit that ranked dead last in points allowed (29.8 ppg) last season. The Saints added veteran linebacker James Laurinaitis to go along with pass-rushing defensive lineman Cameron Jordan and blossoming linebacker Stephone Anthony. New Orleans also needs to improve a secondary that gave up an insane 45 touchdown passes last year.
Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
With the Saints playing at home, I like them to get the outright win and narrow ATS cover.
I know New Orleans has gone 1-4 ATS in their last five Week 1 games, but the Saints are also 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall and a blistering 7-1 TS in their last eight games against Oakland.
The Raiders have lost 20 of their last 25 road games and simply hasn’t looked very competent on defense this preseason.
In addition to backing the Saints to get the SU win and ATS cover, I think the best bet for this Week 1 opener is a play for the Over 51 total points.
Not only has the Over gone 5-0 in the Saints’ last five home games, but there simply won’t be much defense – if any – being played in this affair.
