NFL Odds & Picks Preseason Week 1

The NFL pre-season officially kicks off this week and if you want to dip your toe into the betting pool, here are my NFL preseason week 1 picks.

Who wins on Thursday when Minnesota takes on Buffalo in Orchard Park, NY? Also on Thursday, which defense plays better when New Orleans battles Cleveland? The final game I like also takes place on Thursday, Aug. 10. Can Denver beat Chicago at Soldier Field?

NFL Preseason Week 1 Betting Odds & Picks

Minnesota at Buffalo
When:  Thursday, Aug. 10 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: New ERA Field, Orchard Park, NY
Odds: Buffalo -1, Total 36

Analysis:  Buffalo played exceptionally well last season in NFL Pre-season Week 1. The Bills lost 18 to 19 to Indianapolis. Buffalo’s biggest strength is its offensive line, which was good for over 164.4 rushing yards per game in 2016.

To me, that’s the key in handicapping this battle against Minnesota. Although Buffalo won’t play their starting skill players in this contest, they almost must play their starting offensive line players. That’s the only good way to get an idea of which running backs have the talent, which quarterback deserves to back-up Tyrod Taylor, etc.

Buffalo’s offensive line should lead to a Bills’ victory in this.

Pick: Buffalo -1

New Orleans at Cleveland
When:  Thursday, Aug. 10 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: First Energy Stadium, Cleveland, OH
Odds: pk, Total 39

Analysis: Cleveland didn’t win a single NFL Preseason game in 2016. They should win their first NFL Preseason game this coming Thursday. Sure, on paper the Saints are much better than the Browns. But, there’s no way Sean Payton allows anybody on either side of the ball to get hurt in this game.

Like Buffalo, Cleveland’s offensive line can run block. It can run block quite well. What that tells me is that the Browns find a way to beat the Saints on Aug. 10.

Think about it this way, the Saints have put together what they hope is a decent defense. Do the Saints really want to take the chance of one of their defensive starters getting hurt during the preseason?
Probably not since New Orleans’ defense was horrible last season. Cleveland wins this game.

Pick: Cleveland pk

Denver at Chicago
When:  Thursday, Aug. 10 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Soldier Field, Chicago, IL
TV:  NFL Network
Odds: pk, Total 36.5

Analysis: This one is tough because both Denver and Chicago can’t waste any time figuring out who their starting quarterback is going to be this season. For Denver, it’s about Trevor Siemian versus Paxton Lynch. For Chicago, it’s about Mitch Trubisky versus Mike Glennon.

I think Chicago must play either Trubisky or Glennon for the entire game while Denver can keep Siemian or Lynch on the bench. Will that help Chicago? I think it should. Both Glennon and Trubisky are motivated.

Glennon, especially, is going to want to show that he’s the guy to be in charge this season after Chicago gave him a sweet deal. I like Chicago to get the job done.

Pick: Chicago pk
