Patriots V Panthers NFL Preseason Week 3 Betting Line, Pick & TV Info

NFL Preseason Week 3 betting action begins with the New England Patriots facing the Carolina Panthers this Friday. The game kicks-off at  the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina at 7:30 PM. The NFL oddsmakers have listed the game as a PICK meaning there is no favorite on the sports betting board. Football spread analysts point out that a PICK ‘EM game usually indicates that the oddsmakers are leaning towards a road team victory.

Bill Belichick’s Patriots are in the thralls of Deflategate. Brady’s suspension is looming, barring a judge’s ruling. Their 26-24 come-from-behind victory last week over the Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome was a welcome sight. Last week’s preseason matchup was also the coming out party for backup signal caller Jimmy Garappolo who went 28 for 33, for 269 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.

Riverboat Ron’s Panthers are surprising the league by going undefeated so far during the preseason.  Despite the 2-0 preseason record, the offense visibly misses Kelvin Benjamin, who suffered a torn ACL during practice last week that ended the wideout’s season.

After Garoppolo’s stellar play last week, will Belichick give the backup more snaps during week 3 which is primarly used to show off the starters?

"He threw the ball pretty accurately. A lot different than last week," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Garoppolo to the team’s website . "There really wasn’t a lot of pressure on the quarterback tonight and that’s always a good thing for the passing game."

Brady likely will play the lion’s share of snaps. Belichick will want Brady in a rhythm, no matter how Deflategate pans out.

Last week, Tom Brady on the field for three short series, completing just two of five passes for 13 yards. So far in two preseason games, Brady is 3 of 9 for 23 yards in two games and five series. He’s completed 33.3 percent of his passes and has a passer rating of 42.4. Should you be worried if you bet on the Patriots futures?

Hardly. Reports from training camp are that Brady is in vintage form. If these reports hold, not only is Deflategate a non-issue, it may be the driving force for Brady to earn his 5th ring.

Another sign that the Patriots are out for blood this season is the signing of former Colt WR Reggie Wayne. If he can get a handle on a roster spot, he will join WR Brandon LaFell and TE Rob Gronkowski, making this the deadliest pass catching trio that Brady has had since the Randy Moss days.

The Patriots achilles heel this season may be their defense that is recovering from the loss of several key pieces. The departures of CBs Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner will hurt the most. Last week, against the Saints, the first team D allowed Drew Brees to complete 8 of 10 passes for 159 yards, 2 TDs without an interception. Four of those receptions, along 117 yards and 1 TD were by WR Brandin Cooks.

RB Jonas Gray (412 yds, 5 TDs) CB Devin McCourty (2 INTs)
TE Rob Gronkowski (1124 yds, 12 TDs) DE Rob Ninkovich (8.0 sacks)

The Carolina Panthers have won their two preseason games, including a 31-30 win over the Miami Dolphins last week.  Now they will have to see how many games they can win without stud WR Kelvin Benjamin. The sophamore wide-out developed instant chemistry with Newton in his rookie season. In Charlotte, Newton and Benjamin’s bromance is well known. Newton even helped the 6-foot-5, 240-pound receiver onto the cart after his injury last week.

Early reports are that Newton is building a similar relationship with 2015 second-round pick Devin Funchess.

"He has to learn at an accelerated rate, but I’m taking him up under my wing,” Newton said after Friday’s preseason victory over Miami. "I have full confidence in Devin that he gets it, sooner rather than later.”

“He’s a competitor,” Newton said via ESPN. “He’s a guy that wants to be great. We talk often. I’m pretty much a person that he can trust and that I know I can trust when the game comes on the line. We just need to get him to 100 percent.”

The Panthers also looked flat on defense. Their front seven were unable to get to QB Ryan Tannehill, who dominated the game by completing 12 of 15 passes for 102 yards & 1 TD. The D also incurred nine penalties in the game, something that got under head-coach Rivera’s skin.

"We had three big negative plays that were wiped out because we were offside and you can’t do that and expect to be a good team," Rivera told the NY Times .
