The New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons made their way to Super Bowl 51 on the back of their offenses. The Patriots averaged 27.6 points per game. New England ended the season ranked third in points scored per game. The Falcons averaged over 33 points per game. Atlanta ended the season with the highest-scoring offense on average per game in the NFL.  Super Bowl 51 kicks off on Sunday, Feb 5th at 6:30 pm ET from NRG Stadium in Houston, TX.

The Falcons played in a ton of games that went over. The game over went 13-2-1 in Atlanta’s regular season games. Both of Atlanta’s post-season games went over the total. Most of the Patriots’ regular season games went under the total. The under was 10-6 in New England’s regular season games. Like Atlanta, both Patriots’ post-season games went over the total.

Bet on Over 59.5 Because…

33 plus 27 is 60. That’s a single point over the total of 59. Therefore, if New England scores its customary 27 points, and Atlanta scores its customary 33 points, the total should go over by a point. With that being written, there’s a good chance that New England scores close to 40 in this game just because Atlanta’s defense can give up points versus some teams, but…

Bet on Under 59.5 Because…

New England’s defense doesn’t give up a lot of points. That’s the reason to go under the total of 59. How good is New England’s defense at preventing scores? The Patriots allow 15.6 points per game on average. Although the Pats gave up over 15.6 points versus Houston in the Divisional Playoff and against Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship, New England still allowed less than 20 points in both games. Houston scored 16. Pittsburgh scored 17.

New England is going to put up points against the Atlanta Falcons’ defense. Atlanta can’t possibly play man to man, or zone, on every down. Even Green Bay WR Jordy Nelson beat his man on occasion, and Nelson has cracked ribs. What is Chris Hogan, Julian Edelman, and Malcolm Mitchell going to do?  They’re going to torch Atlanta’s secondary.

The problem that the Falcons are going to have on defense is pressuring New England QB Tom Brady. Houston got to Brady at times and New England still hung 34 points on the Texans. If the Falcons can’t get to Brady, they’re going to be in a world of trouble.

I think the Patriots are good for close to 40 points in this. I also believe that although the Pats’ defense doesn’t give up a lot of points, the D hasn’t faced a team nearly as talented as Atlanta is on offense.

QB Matt Ryan, the soon to be NFL MVP, should have a decent game. What it means is that the Falcons could score close to 30 points in this game. Even if New England’s defense plays tough, I think the Falcons are good for at least 24 points.

I am betting the game total of Super Bowl 51 will go over 59.5-points.
