NFL Preseason Week 3 Upset PicksJosh Bailey
It’s always difficult finding upsets in the NFL Preseason. But, I believe I’ve found the 3 that are a lock. All 3 upsets are on the money line. Is Detroit good enough to beat New England at home this Friday? Who takes it when Indianapolis travels to Pittsburgh? Which team wins in Sunday’s intriguing matchup between the Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys?
NFL Preseason Week 3 Upset Picks
New England at Detroit
When: Friday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
Odds: New England -2
Analysis: I’m all over Detroit in this game. I want to be clear that the Lions might go off the slight favorites before kick-off. As I see it now, New England, due to reputation more than anything, starts out as the -2 favorites before dollars come in on the Lions.
Why do I like the Lions? I just don’t see New England coach Bill Belichick wasting his time with this preseason game. New England takes care of things during practice. That’s why Bill is notorious at releasing as little information as possible during the regular season.
He’s never been one to show his hand during any NFL preseason. He won’t do it on Friday.
Detroit, on the other hand, must continue to get the timing down between Matthew Stafford and his wide receivers. Stafford should play at least 2 quarters in this game. That makes them the winner because it’s doubtful Tom Brady plays at all.
Pick: Detroit Lions straight up by at least 4 points
Indianapolis at Pittsburgh
When: Saturday, August 26 at 7:30 pm ET
Where: Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA
Odds: Pittsburgh -3
Analysis: Quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Pittsburgh’s Big Ben Roethlisberger don’t need to play during NFL Preseason games. First, they’re older, which means they can get hurt much easier than younger quarterbacks. Second, they know their teams’ offenses so well that there’s no advantage for veteran quarterbacks like Brady and Big Ben to lace them up in a preseason game.
So, yes, I like the Indianapolis Colts to get the job done on Saturday in Pittsburgh. Pitt won’t play too many starters in this game. They can’t.
Indianapolis is going to play a lot of hungry, young, players who want to make the team. I’ll go with the young, hungry players, versus the players that know they’re going to be backups if they make the team any day of the week.
The Colts have more to do to get ready for the regular season. They’re going to beat Pittsburgh on the road as likely underdogs in NFL Preseason Week 3.
Pick: Indianapolis straight up by at least 6 points.
Oakland at Dallas
When: Saturday, Aug. 26 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
Odds: Dallas -1.5
Analysis: Dallas and Oakland had their offenses going in NFL Preseason Week 2. Oakland scored 21 points while the Cowboys’ offense scored 24.
Which offense has the better game? I think Oakland’s does. Dallas can’t take the chance of RB Darren McFadden getting hurt now that Zeke is on the bench for the first 6 games of the regular season.
QB Dak Prescott should also see his reps limited. I like Oakland to score close to 30 in this game. Derek Carr only threw 9 passes in Week 2. He should throw closer to 20 in Week 3 before taking a seat in NFL Preseason Week 4.
Oakland beats Dallas straight up.
Pick: Oakland straight up by at least 3 points
