Why Bet the Seattle Seahawks Spread At +3
The Seahawks went a perfect 4-0 in the preseason by beating the Chargers, Vikings, Chiefs and recording a 17-13 win over the Raiders in their finales as backup quarterback Trevone Boykin completed 13 of 21 passes for 166 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
More importantly, Seattle was outstanding defensively in 2016 in finishing a stellar third in points allowed (18.3 ppg) while finishing inside the top 10 against both, the run and pass. Unfortunately for the perennial title contenders, Russell Wilson and the team’s offense struggled mightily in ranking just 18th in scoring (22.1 ppg) as Wilson and several others battled injuries all season, including running back Thomas Rawls who was expecting to replace former running back Marshawn Lynch seamlessly. The good news is that Seattle made some smart offseason additions on both sides of the ball by adding guys like veteran running back Eddie Lacy and defensive end Dion Jordan in free agency and drafting solid prospects like center Ethan Pocic, cornerback Shaq Griffin and wide receiver Amara Darboh.
“I like where we are,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said recently. “We’ve made a lot of progress, we’re pretty strong going in (to the regular season), pretty healthy. We’ve been real clear about what we’re trying to get done and guys have really responded in practices and all of the work that we’ve done. The guys have been right on it; we’ve had no backward steps at all. I like our team, (they’re) smart, they know what we’re trying to get done. The leadership is very much in-tune with how this is supposed to go and they’ve been strong and they’ve been affecting the young guys.”
Why Bet the Green Bay Packers Spread At -3
The Packers went 3-1 in the preseason by beating Philadelphia and Washington in Weeks 1 and 2 before losing to Denver and finishing off the scrimmage season with a win 24-10 against the rebuilding Rams as backup quarterback Brett Hundley completed 11 of 21 passes for 99 yards and one touchdown while adding a 13-yard rushing score in the win.
Thanks mostly to the contributions of future Hall of fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay ranked fourth in scoring last season (27.0 ppg) and could be even better in 2017 after adding former Pro-Bowl guard Jahri Evans and a pair of veteran tight ends in Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks in free agency.
The Packers are looking to improve defensively after finishing a modest 21st in points allowed (24.3 ppg). The good news is that the Packers used their top four draft picks on defensive players and added unrestricted free agents in cornerback Davon House, linebacker Ahmad Brooks and defensive end Ricky Jean Francois.
"I feel good about the guys we have, the guys coming back and the young guys who are really taking a step in the right direction," Packers linebacker Clay Matthews said. "I feel ready to go."
Seattle Seahawks Vs Green Bay Packers NFL Week 1 Betting Analysis
While Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are playing at home in this opener and have won the last two meetings against the Seahawks, including a 38-10 shellacking of Seattle in Week 14 last season, I’ve got a feeling that Seattle is going to be the best team in the NFC this season and it starts with a statement-making road win against the Pack in Week 1.
I know the home team in this series is a near-perfect 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and that the Seahawks are a winless 0-4-1 ATS in their last five road dates against Green Bay and 0-4 ATS in their last four road games overall, but I really am expecting to see a different Seattle team in 2017 and I believe it will start with a big road win that will snap Green Bay’s 4-0 ATS mark in their last four home games.
Pick: Seattle +3
