Let’s take a closer look at the matchup within the matchup in Super Bowl 49.

Super Bowl 49 Betting On Kam Chancellor Shutting Down Gronk

How good is Kam Chancellor?  Kam Chancellor is the best strong safety in the NFL. He’s the best strong safety against the run. He’s the best strong safety in coverage and he’s the best tackling safety in the league.

Kam can also read a quarterback’s eyes better than any strong safety in the NFL. One need only watch how he knew exactly where Cam Newton was throwing the football, broke on the pass, and ran it back for a pick six in the division game against the Seahawks to realize how terrific Kam is at knowing what a quarterback is going to do.

But, is Kam good enough to shut down Rob Gronkowski?  The problem with covering Gronk is that as good as Kam Chancellor is, he simply might not be big enough to keep the behemoth that is Gronk from catching passes and rumbling down the football field. Kam Chancellor is 6’ 3” and weighs 232 lbs. He is not a small man. But, Rob Gronkowski is 6’ 6” and weighs 265 lbs. He also has speed and Gronkowski’s rapport with quarterback Tom Brady is as good as any wide receiver and quarterback combo rapport in the NFL even though Gronk is a tight-end.

Unfortunately, and this a Seattle fan writing this, though Kam Chancellor figures to have more success than most against Gronk, the truth is that Gronkowski figures to catch enough passes to help New England to a victory in the Super Bowl. Nobody in the NFL can cover Rob Gronkowski.

Once thing to note is that if Seattle gives Kam some help, maybe, Kam passes Gronk off to Richard Sherman or Earl Thomas at some point on the field, Kam could shut down Gronk just enough for Seattle to win the game.  But, that’s a big assumption about something that may or may not happen.
