The Odds On Betting Favorite To Win Super Bowl 51: New England Patriots 6/1
It’s amazing that the Patriots are still listed as the best bet to win Super Bowl 51 in the odds with Tom Brady scheduled to miss the first 4 games. The biggest question about the Pats is whether or not QB Jimmy Garoppolo will play well enough to keep the Pats offense humming along. The second biggest question is what affect Rob Ninkovich being suspended for the first 4 games is going to have on the Pats defense.
My expectation was that New England’s odds would rise to 8/1, which is what bettors are getting on Seattle, Green Bay and Arizona. That hasn’t happened. What it means is that New England remains an underlay.
The Smart Bet To Win Super Bowl 51: Carolina Panthers 12/1
The Panthers have held steady at 12/1 odds to win the Super Bowl. I’ve grown to love the Panthers at those 12/1 odds. Carolina has one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in Cam Newton. Last season’s NFL MVP could be better this season because talented WR Kelvin Benjamin is healthy. The Panthers also have one of the great defensive leaders in the NFL on their team in LB Luke Keuchely. Panthers coach Ron Rivera has been with the team since 2011.
But the biggest reason why I love Carolina is because they play in the NFC South. Although all 3 of their opponents in the NFC South have improved from last season, Carolina is still the class of the division. Carolina will lose 5 to 6 games during the season. It may not matter. They should still win the NFC South.
The Upset Pick To Win Super Bowl 51: Tennessee Titans 80/1
Teams with great rushing attacks are hard to beat. That’s the way it is in the NFL. Tennessee has that. The Titans have what could end up as the best rushing game in the entire league after what I saw during the NFL Preseason. Both Derrick Henry, last season’s College Football Heisman Trophy winner, and DeMarco Murray, the former Dallas great who wasted an entire season in Philadelphia in 2015, were great during the preseason. Big tackle Jack Conklin showed why the Titans passed on Laremy Tunsil. Tennessee QB Marcus Mariota will be better. The defense has improved some. 80 to 1 makes the Titans’ an overlay to win Super Bowl 51.
Odds as of Sept. 5.
