Will the third time be the charm for Chip Kelly’s high-scoring Philadelphia Eagles as they look to win their first preseason contest and cover their Thursday Night Week 3 NFL preseason betting odds?
Thursday Night Football Preseason Week 3 Betting Odds
Pittsburgh Steelers vs Philadelphia Eagles -3.5
Game Total: 50
The Eagles have used their high-scoring offense to put up four more touchdowns than their in-state, AFC-based counterparts, the Pittsburgh Steelers, through each teams’ two preseason games so far.
Surprisingly, all of those points haven’t helped the Birds get in the win column while the Pittsburgh’s far less explosive offense has helped them split outcomes in their first pair of preseason contests.
Of course, it helps when you have a solid defense – and you play two teams that are in the process of sizable rebuilding jobs. Now, both of these Super Bowl hopefuls will look to really perform well in the third and most important preseason contest there is.
Let’s take a look at this Thursday night matchup that features the age-old pairing of a good offensive team against a ‘defense-first’ opponent.
Why Should You Bet On The Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-2 O/U) got its first win of the preseason by recording a narrow 19-16 win over Baltimore in their Week 2 preseason matchup to cover the spread as a slight 1-point home favorite. The Steelers bounced back from their 20-16 preseason opening loss to the Giants as a 2.5-point road underdog, but head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t leased with the team’s offensive output so far.

“There are a lot of things (to) build upon for this football game, Tomlin said following Pittsburgh’s win over the Bills. “We kind of came in with the mindset that we would throw the ball around with our first group and run some no-huddle things. We responded to some situations but some things obviously that need to be cleaned up. Too many penalties, too many missed tackles I thought particularly in the early stages”.
Why Should You Bet On The Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS, 2-0 O/U) have looked fantastic on offense as they’ve scored 28 points against Chicago in their preseason opener before putting up an even more impressive 35 points in their Week 2 preseason tilt against New England.
The bad news for Philadelphia betting backers is the fact that the Birds have been almost non-existent on defense in allowing the Bears to score 34 points and New England, 43 points.
Making matters even worse is the fact that Philadelphia has been a virtual penalty machine that consistently gives shoots themselves in the foot. The Eagles have racked up a whopping 19 penalties in their two preseason games and would collect a whopping 152 penalties if they continued at the same rate during the regular season.
"I said earlier, whichever team ends up being the most disciplined team from a penalty standpoint is gonna be at a big advantage in this league," head coach Chip Kelly said. "And so it’s a challenge to everybody. We’ve all gotta figure it out."

NFL Preseason Week 3 Prediction
I like the Philadelphia Eagles to get their first win if the preseason and cover the NFL Week 3 betting odds in the process.
Although Philly’s defense has been pretty abysmal in allowing a whopping 76 points in two games, I’m not real crazy about Pittsburgh’s ability to move the ball consistently and I don’t believe they’ll be able to keep up with Philly’s high-octane offense, particularly seeing as how they’re also going to be far more desperate to get this win.
The Eagles won three straight home games against Pittsburgh while covering the spread each time out. The Birds beat the Steelers 15-6 on September 21, 2008 to cash in as a 3.5-point home fave the last time these two in-state rivals met in the City of Brotherly Love.
Home teams have covered the spread 59.38 percent of the time (19-13-1 ATS) this preseason and I believe Philly will too. I also like the Under to play out in this Week 3 matchup with the Under playing out 19 times in 33 preseason games to date (57.58%).
My Pick: Philadelphia Eagles -3.5 Points/Under 50 Total Points
