Mariota completed 13 of 16 passes for 209 yards and 4 TDs. He was poised and played error free. Granted it was the Bucs D that he was facing. The credit should riglty go to the offenseive coaching staff. Whisenhunt & co put together a perfect plan to beat Tampa by using the skills that Mariota a household name as a Duck.
“That was a great indication of the difference in speed between college and the NFL,” Whisenhunt was quick to praise Mariota. “In college, he probably would have run that in. In the NFL, he thought he could. When you lose three yards on a play down there in that area of the field, that’s critical, you can’t do that.”
The Titans offense recorded 333 total yards in week one, 124 rushing yards. 72 were courtesy of second-year RB Bishop Sankey, who also scored a TD. WR Kendall Wright was Mariota’s top target with 101 receiving yards and a 52-yard TD.
The Cleveland Browns had an awful showing in the first week, losing 31-10 to the Jets in New York. The offense turned the ball over five times.
QB Josh McCown was literally knocked out of the game after diving towards the end-zone. Half way there he was hit and he helicoptered and fell short of the goal line. He suffered a concussion for his bravery. Sophamore QB Johnny Manziel was called in to take over under center and showed flashes of what made him an Aggie star. He threw his first career touchdown pass, but also committed three turnovers in a 31-10 loss.
"It’s a quarterback who’s running towards the goal line and has a chance to score a touchdown,” Browns coach Mike Pettine was quoted by Cleveland.com regarding McCown’s injury. "I don’t know how you coach a competitor, a real football player, to slide there.”
McCown was scheduled to workout Friday and if he practiced he was Pettine’s guy. But he was not cleared for the workout or practice. Pettine has named Johnny Football the starter for this game. Manziel completed 13 of 24 passes for 182 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT, and carried the ball five times for 35 rushing yards last week.
