In my career-long theme of ‘keeping it real’ no matter who may get offended, I have to admit that there’s no other way to say it except to admit that each of the top five sports cities in the U.S. have plenty of good, bad and even some ugly when it comes to supporting – or going against – their beloved hometown teams.
That’s right, just as it is in any longstanding relationship, things tend to change and feelings can be both, comforted or smashed into a million tiny little pieces. Each of the following cities has seen more than its share of both – and their often crazed sports fans’ love – or hatred – of their hometown teams makes this list because of the fanaticism of its respective fans.
With all of that said, let’s get started.
- New York
Let’s keep it real sports fans. Just like there is no city in the U.S. quite like the Big Apple, there is no city with its kind of crazed sports fans. Be it good or bad, one thing about New York sports fans is that they’re extremely passionate…okay, some even say psychotic, but you didn’t hear that from me. Whether it’s the Giants, Jets, Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Nets, Yankees or Mets, New York sports fans will let you know how they feel about each of the area’s franchises, all in a New York minute too.
If you don’t know by now, then you should know that Boston Celtics (me included) and Boston Red Sox fans are absolutely nuts about their beloved ballclubs. While the Celtics and BoSox come first and foremost in Beantown, they are both closely followed by their unwavering adoration for the Patriots and Bruins. Not only does the city have some of the most passionate fans in the world, but Bostonians are also extremely intelligent about each of the area’s four professional sports teams.
Say what you like about Philadelphia sports fans – and the city’s often underwhelming professional sports teams – but I say that Philadelphians love – and hate – their four professional sports teams with a passion that is only matched by the two aforementioned cities. It doesn’t matter if they’re talking about a Michael Vick interception, a Flyers team that just fired its head coach only a handful of games into the season or the fading Phillies or the continuously rebuilding Sixers, Philadelphians know their sports – and they’ll share their feelings with you – whether you like it or not!
While the insane amount of violence currently taking place in Chicago gets all of the national news these days, what goes unsaid is how much residents in the Windy City absolutely love their professional sports teams. Whether it’s the Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears, White Sox or….okay…forget the Cubs…Chicagoans absolutely love their professional sports teams. Not only that, but residents in the Windy City are incredibly knowledgeable about each of the city’s teams – and they all have an answer on how to fix each franchise’s problems.
- Los Angeles
I know that Los Angeles is all about it glitz and glamour, but if you think they’re not serious about their professional sports, then you had better think again. L.A. residents are some of the most knowledgeable sports fans around, even if they don’t have their own NFL franchise.
Los Angeles sports fans come from all over the country, so they certainly are a diverse bunch. They also know their sports inside and out whether you’re talking about the Lakers, Dodgers, Kings or some other team on the east coast. Like I or not, L.A. residents know sports, even if they’re not nearly as fanatical or vociferous in expressing their respective opinions as some of the residents in the aforementioned cities.
