The Travelling Bengals Post No Value In NFL Betting Against San Diego

Believe it or not, the Cincinnati Bengals are the third favorite in the AFC Championships futures. At 7-4 SU and 6-41 ATS on the season, they’ve been relatively reliable depending on the circumstance. However, if f you’re paying attention to details, it should raise a few eyebrows that they’re not road favorites. That says more about the big picture in the AFC than it does about this particular matchup.

For a lot of people, the Bengals represent a mixed bag. They’re a bit one-sided offensively, and they’re scrappy on the defense but there isn’t a lot of consistency. NFL betting nutjobs like myself know one things for certain – they are a terrifying prospect on the road. The Bengals are a surreal 5-0 SU and ATS when playing at home and just 2-4 SU and 1-3-1 ATS when travelling. That’s the biggest reason why this line is reduced to pick ‘em territory. Nobody really trusts the Bengals away from home.

Cincinnati Bengals (7-4) vs. San Diego Chargers (5-6)
The Bengals and Chargers meet San Diego for this week 13 matchup.
Starts: 12/01/2013 4:30PM
Qualcomm Stadium, 9449 Friars Road
San Diego, California

San Diego has been a much better team than generally expected. It certainly hasn’t helped that 7 of their last 10 games have been on the road. They’ve had just four home games all year and are 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS in those matchups. Those two losses included an eight-point defeat against Denver and a three-point loss against Houston from the first week of the season.

Generally, the Chargers have been waiting for this moment in the season. They needed to get past a three week stretch that included games against Denver and a road trip to Kansas City. Four of their last five games are at home, and they’re all winnable matchups. The road trip against Denver is obviously nauseating if you’re a San Diego backer, but you have to like this home stretch. I’m mentioning this because now is as good a time as any to get in on the Chargers.

This is a conflict of styles for both teams. The Bengals have been brutal in stopping the run when travelling and have allowed the weirdest teams (i.e. Baltimore, Miami, Buffalo) to push them in to overtime games on the road. Offensively, Andy Dalton and the Bengals average just 20.3 points per game when travelling and they don’t play with the same type of killswitch mentality that they do on when playing on their home field.

What you have to understand about the Chargers is that they’ve always had this nasty habit of playing up and down to the level of their competition. They’ll come out swinging against Cincinnati, and when the Bengals can’t punch back, San Diego will keep on rolling through. Whatever causes the Bengals to go catatonic on the road needs to be sussed out, but until they prove they can play well during a road trip, the home bound Chargers are the stronger pick ‘em play in NFL betting for Week 13.
