The 2017 NFL season may not begin for another few weeks, but you can start building your NFL betting bankroll today! Use my NFL preseason Week 1 upset picks to cash in.
On Thursday, Jacksonville is a 5.5 dog to the New England Patriots. I like the Jags. Also on Thursday, Philadelphia battles Green Bay at Lambeau as a +2-point dog. I like Jacksonville. My final upset pick for the week has San Francisco at +4.5 battling Kansas City in KC.
Why do I like the teams I do for NFL Preseason Week 1 upsets?
Jacksonville at New England
When: Thursday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 pm ET
Where: Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA
Odds: Jacksonville +5.5, Total 41
Analysis: I don’t believe any team should be favored over another team by more than 2 points in the NFL Preseason. Why would I even consider backing New England? The Patriots won’t play Tom Brady. They won’t even play Jimmy Garrapolo in this game.
Jacksonville, if they want to win this season, should give Blake Bortles at least a quarter under center. Even if Jacksonville doesn’t play Bortles, they should play more starters than a veteran team like New England does.
I think Jax is a lock to cover the spread at +5.5. New England coach Bill Belichick never shows his hand in any NFL Preseason game.
Pick: Jacksonville +5.5
Philadelphia at Green Bay
When: Thursday, Aug. 10 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI
Odds: Philadelphia +2, Total 40
Analysis: Philadelphia versus Green Bay could end up a big-time playoff game this season. Both teams look tough going into the NFL Preseason.
In this game, neither squad should send out their starters. Philadelphia has young skill players. What it means is that the Eagles might have to play wide receivers like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Nelson Agholor. Both those guys have WR1 potential.
Not only that, but since Philly signed LeGarrette Blount, they can afford to play Wendell Smallwood in this matchup. Smallwood has a lot of talent. He could have a monster game versus Green Bay on Thursday.
I think Philadelphia covers.
Pick: Philadelphia +2
San Francisco at Kansas City
When: Friday, Aug. 11 at 9:00 pm ET
Where: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO
Odds: San Francisco +4.5, Total 37.5
Analysis: I’m going with the younger team in this match up as well. San Francisco doesn’t really have a starting quarterback. The quarterbacks on their roster are Matt Barkley, C.J. Beathard, Brian Hoyer, and Nick Mullens.
Barkley has some NFL starting experience. Hoyer might play just so the 49’ers can say the starting QB position isn’t his already while both Beathard and Mullens should get a few snaps. No matter who plays QB for SF, I think they face a much less difficult task then who plays QB for KC.
The Chiefs shouldn’t play either starter Alex Smith, or Round 1 draft pick Patrick Mahomes II in this game. KC must play Tyler Brave and Joel Stave. Neither QB should intimidate the San Francisco 49’ers defense.
I believe the Niners cover.
Pick: San Francisco +4.5
