NFL Week 2 Upset Picks

After a stunning Week 1 of NFL action that was ripe with upset wins are there week 2 upset picks that you can take advantage of?

Can New England follow up an upset win over Arizona when they host rival Miami?

Can Tennessee bounce back from a loss to Minnesota?

Was Philly’s rookie quarterback’s performance real or was it a mirage?

NFL Week 2 Upset Picks

Miami at New England
When:  Sunday, Sept.18 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA
TV: CBS
Odds: New England -4.5

Analysis: Miami had Seattle on the ropes in Week 1. The Seahawks ended up winning the game 12 to 10, but take nothing away from the Dolphins. As a 10.5-point dog, Miami’s defense really stepped it up versus Seattle’s high-powered offense.

The Dolphins battle the rival New England Patriots on Sunday, Sept. 18. New England usually owns Miami. But this is a different Dolphins’ team than in year’s past. Although New England played exceptionally well in their 23 to 21 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1, Miami figures to be a stern home test. This is especially true since New England will be without QB Tom Brady. Miami’s defense sacked Russell Wilson 3 times in the Week 1 loss.

This line should go up some from 4.5. I think the Dolphins can be had for 5.5 to 6 points after the Patriots beat the Cardinals on Sunday night in Week 1. I like the Dolphins to cover the spread.

Pick: Miami +4.5

Tennessee at Detroit
When:  Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
TV: CBS
Odds: Tennessee +5.5

Analysis: The Detroit Lions upset Indianapolis 39 to 35 on the road in Week 1. The Lions’ offense didn’t look like it had any trouble without Calvin Johnson. Detroit rushed for 116 yards. Matthew Stafford threw for 340 yards when completing 31 out of 39 passes. He threw 3 touchdown passes.

In Week 2, the Lions host the hard on their luck Tennessee Titans. The Titans’ rushing attack got stuffed in Week 1 at home against Minnesota. Tennessee could muster only 64 yards on the ground. Derrick Henry rushed for 3 yards on 5 carries. DeMarco Murray rushed for 42 yards on 13 carries.

Although Detroit looks tough in this game, the Lions’ defense gave up 82 yards on the ground to Indianapolis. Tennessee should be able to have much better luck on the ground in Week 2 than they did in Week 1. I like Murray and Henry to go off. I’ll back the Titans at 5.5 points.

Pick: Tennessee +5.5

Philadelphia at Chicago
When:  Monday, Sept. 19 at 8:25 pm ET
Where: Soldier Field, Chicago, IL
TV: ESPN
Odds: Chicago -3

Analysis: Philadelphia QB Carson Wentz looked terrific in his first NFL start. He completed 22 out of 37 for 278 yards. He threw 2 touchdown passes. He didn’t throw an interception. Wentz looked good.

But there aren’t a whole lot of believers out there. The Chicago Bears, who lost 14 to 23 to Houston in Week 1, are 3-point favorites over Philadelphia. I don’t understand why 57% of NFL bettors are backing the Bears. To me, this is one of those no-brainers. Philly rushed for 133 yards versus Cleveland. Chicago gave up 131 rushing yards to the Texans.
Philadelphia sure looks the play to me in this matchup.

Pick: Philadelphia +3
