NFL Upset Picks Week 5

Can Detroit hand Philadelphia its first loss of the season? Will Chicago continue to play well against Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4? How will Washington respond against Maryland rival Baltimore in Week 5 after winning their second straight? See below for my NFL Week 5 Upset Picks!

Philadelphia at Detroit
When:  Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
TV: FOX
Odds: Detroit +2.5

Analysis: Philadelphia is all the rage after starting out the season 3-0 straight up. Actually, nobody really believed in Philly until they beat Pittsburgh 34 to 3 in Week 3 right before their bye.

Detroit lost 14 to 17 to Chicago in Week 4. The Lions are much better than what they showed versus the Bears in that game. Detroit’s offense averages 376 yards per matchup. That ranks Detroit in the Top 10 in yards per game.

Defensively, the Lions aren’t great. But this is only Eagle rookie QB Carson Wentz’s second road game. I think that the Lions’ defense comes up big versus Wentz while Detroit’s Matthew Stafford gets back on track after a so-so game versus Chicago in Week 4.

I like the Lions to possibly pull off the SU upset in this matchup.

Pick: Detroit +2.5

Chicago at Indianapolis
When:  Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: Lucas Oil Stadium Indianapolis, IN
TV: FOX
Odds: Chicago +4.5

Analysis: The Bears won their first game of the season against Detroit in Week 4. It was a nice 17 to 13 victory where the Bears’ D held Detroit QB Matthew Stafford to 213 passing yards and 0 TD passes. Stafford threw 2 interceptions. Chicago’s secondary is ranked 8th in passing yards allowed.

The Bears could slow down Andrew Luck and the Colts’ passing game. If they do, Chicago has a shot to win their second straight game. On offense, the Bears average 252.8 passing yards per game. Chicago might be able to take advantage of an Indianapolis defense yielding an average of 382.8 total yards and over 30 points per matchup.

I have to take the points in this one. Chicago is just as good of a team as Indianapolis.

Pick: Chicago +4.5

Washington at Baltimore
When:  Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, MD
TV: FOX
Odds: Washington +3.5

Analysis: I don’t understand why Baltimore is favored by over 3 points against the Maryland rival Washington DC’ers on Sunday, Oct. 9. Washington has won 2 SU and 2 ATS in a row. They beat the New York Giants 29 to 27 as a +3.5 road dog in Week 3. They beat Cleveland 31 to 20 as a -7.5 home favorite in Week 4.

In both games, QB Kirk Cousins was spectacular. In fact, Cousins has a 5 TD to 1 interception ratio in his last 2 games. He completed 77.8% of his passes versus Cleveland in Week 4. The Ravens’ defense allowed Oakland QB Derek Carr to throw 4 touchdown passes against them in a 27 to 28 home loss in their last.

I don’t see how Baltimore beats Washington by more than 2 to 3 points in this game. I’m taking the points on the DC’ers.

Pick: Washington +3.5
