Why Bet the New York Jets Odds at +8.5
The New York Jets didn’t look as bad as most people thought they would in going 2-2 in the preseason while beating Tennessee and Philadelphia in Weeks 1 and 4 and losing to Detroit and the New York Giants in Weeks 2 and 3 respectively. Backup Christian Hackenburg went 10 of 22 for 105 yards and a touchdown in New York’s Week 4 preseason finale, but veteran signal-caller Josh McCown has been announced as the Jets starter for the regular season opener. Last season, the Jets finished 30th in scoring (17.2 ppg) and an equally disappointing 28th in points allowed (25.6 ppg).
In addition to adding McCown, the Jets also signed veteran cornerback Morris Claiborne and left tackle Kelvin Beachum while drafting hard-hitting safety Jamal Adams in the first round. New York parted ways with veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis, center Nick Mangold and wide receivers Brandon Marshall among others.
Why Bet the Buffalo Bills Odds at -8.5
The Buffalo Bills went 1-3 in the preseason and got a meaningless 27-17 win in Week 4 against Detroit, although the outing was a good chance for rookie Nathan Peterman to continue to make his case to be Tyrod Taylor’s backup this season. The former University of Pittsburgh star completed 9 of 11 passes for a team-high 81 passing yards in the win. Tyrod Taylor, suffered in Week 3 of the preseason and is questionable for this regular season opener, although I’m expecting him to suit up and start. The Bills finished the 2016 season ranked a solid 10th in scoring (24.9 ppg) and respectable 16th in points allowed (23.6 ppg).
Buffalo has a new head coach this season in Sean McDermott, the former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator. Buffalo also parted ways with elite cornerback Stephon Gilmore, running back Mike Gilislee, veteran corner Ronald Darby and No. 1 wide receiver Sammy Watkins. The Bills did add some serious talent in first round draft pick, cornerback, Tre’Davious White and gifted second round pick, wide receiver Zay Jones.
New York Jets Vs Buffalo Bills NFL Week 1 Betting Analysis
I have no idea why the Buffalo Bills are 8.5-point home favorites to beat the Jets, particularly after they sent the message out that they are clearly playing for the future by getting rid of some of the best veterans for future draft picks.
While the home team in this division rivalry has gone 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings and the Jets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Buffalo, the Underdog in this rivalry is also 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings. I don’t have a lot of belief in New York as they face a sea of uncertainty, but I do like them to cover the spread against the Bills while really, pushing them for the outright win.
Pick: New York Jets +8.5
