Week 16 NFL Spread – Romo, Cowboys Tight Faves Against Washington

This whole thing about Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys in December is getting ridiculous, and if you don’t know what I’m talking about then look at the Week 16 NFL spread in this game. Dallas is favored by -2.5 points against one of the worst teams in the league. How can this be?

For nearly his entire career, Tony Romo has been known as a non-closer. A choker. Not a playoff performer. You want proof? They’re 8-21 ATS in their last 29 games in the month of December. Last weekend, Romo threw two costly picks late in the game against Green Bay, which weren’t entirely his fault. Yes he threw them, but those were also two incredible picks. And Dallas shouldn’t have been throwing in those situations. You can blame Garret if you want to, but Romo also audibled in to one of those throws. So I guess he is to blame.

You also can’t ignore what’s at stake for Washington, or rather what isn’t at stake. The Redskins traded away their first round draft pick in 2014 as part of the package that helped them move up to draft Robert Griffin III. Basically, there’s no reason for them to lose against the Week 16 NFL spread because there’s no booby prize. And as melodramatic as this season has been, these guys are still competitors. The only real question is whether they’re responding to Mike Shanahan.

I think we received an answer to that question last week when Washington rallied to lose by one point to Atlanta by a final score of 26-27. The Redskins started off horribly, but that’s to be expected when they’re starting Kirk Cousins for the first time in the young man’s career. Cousins ended that game with 381 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with 2 picks, and has all the reason to keep playing at a high level since it means that he could be traded out of the shadow of Griffin who will return in full force in 2014.

Even if you think this whole “Cowboys in December” thing is nothing more than a running gag (and a hilarious one at that) you can’t ignore the numbers. Dallas’s defense is being torn to shreds lately without Sean Lee, and are giving up crucial touchdowns when the game is on the line. And the Cowboys have already lost two consecutive games to backup quarterbacks. A third one could very well be on the way. Actually, I’m betting on it.
