Week 17 NFL Betting Line Picks – Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Diego Chargers

If you’re wondering why this Week 17 NFL betting line is so large for the San Diego Chargers, it’s because Kansas City doesn’t have anything to play for. The Chiefs were blown out by Indianapolis last weekend in their final home game of the year, but remain locked in to the AFC’s fifth seed meaning they’ll hit the road for wild card weekend. We can debate the benefits and risks of resting your starters in Week 17 all day long, but the fact remains that we won’t be seeing a whole lot of Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles.

The Chiefs haven’t been a great play throughout the last two months, going just 3-5 ATS in their last 8 games. Personally, I still think that Kansas is a legitimate threat in the AFC especially considering the Von Miller injury and the Patriots’ overall health concerns. But getting to the big dance healthy themselves seems like the priority for Andy Reid and at this point in the season he knows exactly what his team is capable of. There’s no reason to jeopardize their playoff run by playing a few meaningless snaps in an otherwise meaningless game.

Kansas City Chiefs (11-4) vs. San Diego Chargers (8-7)
The San Diego Chargers are 9.5 point favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs in week 17.
Starts: 12/29/2013 4:20PM
Qualcomm Stadium, 9449 Friars Road
San Diego, California

San Diego will know their playoff chances by the time kick off happens. The only way that San Diego can crack in to the post season is if Baltimore and Miami both lose. While I think that the Ravens will have a tough run in Cincinnati, the Dolphins host the Jets this weekend in a game that seems fairly academic. Even still, the Chargers should hold strong value as heavy favorites in Week 17 NFL betting lines for a couple reasons.

Obviously, if the playoffs are in reach, they’ll play full tilt. If those dreams have been dashed, San Diego has every reason to end their season on a high note. This has been a trying season but San Diego has finished as strong as anyone with a 4-1 SU and ATS record to go along with a comforting +19.0 point differential in their last five games.

Danny Woodhead and Ryan Matthews are one of the most underappreciated backfield duos in the NFL. I mean that. And with or without the playoffs at their fingertips, the Chargers have played with a staggering amount of pride following their mid-season three game losing skid that included a tie breaking defeat to the Dolphins. They may not be able to control their own destiny, but they can absolutely seize this game by the throat. This game means more to San Diego from a pride stand point than the Chiefs, who will ride in to town in cruise control making them a Week 17 NFL betting line no-no this weekend.
