NFL Week 2 Upset Picks

Matchup: Detroit Lions at Carolina Panthers
Spread: Panthers -2.5
Total: Off
Kickoff: Sunday Sept 14th, 1:00 PM ET

Analysis: It’s nice that the Carolina Panthers (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) picked up a narrow 20-14 Week 1 win over NFC South division rival Tampa Bay without starting quarterback Cam Newton to cover the spread as a 5-point road favorite in Week 1, but I’m not real find of the Panthers as they get set to host a Detroit Lions team that I believe is going to really challenge for a playoff berth this season.

I’ve already gone on record several times to say that I believe first-year head coach Jim Caldwell is going to help the talent-laden Lions remove the dysfunction that constantly plagued them under former head coach Jim Schwartz.

The Lions (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) looked fantastic in embarrassing veteran quarterback Eli Manning and the New York Giants in their convincing 35-14 beat-down on Monday night as quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 22 of 32 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns.

Detroit easily covered the spread as a 6.5-point home favorite and I believe they’re going to do the same to an offensively-challenged Panthers squad in this Week 2 matchup.

I know the Carolina Panthers are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight home games and that Detroit is just 5-15-1 ATS in its last 21 road games, but I love the Lions as an upset pick in this contest.

My NFL Week 2 Upset Pick: Detroit Lions +2.5 Point

Matchup: Houston Texans at Oakland Raiders
Spread: Houston -3
Total: 39.5
Kickoff: Sunday Sept 14th, 4:25 PM ET

Analysis: The Houston Texans picked up a solid 17-6 win over Washington in Week 1 to cover the spread as a 3-point home favorite, but I think they’re going to have a much tougher time in duplicating their performance against Oakland in this Week 2 matchup.

Yes, I know the Raiders are coming off a 19-14 road loss against the New York Jets in their 2014 regular season opener, but I like the way Oakland kept battling until the very end to both, cover the spread as a 6.5-point road dog and make it a close contest late.

More importantly, I like the energy that rookie Derek Carr has brought to the Raiders and I believe that he is going to make a rebuilding Texans squad pay the cost in this matchup.

Carr completed 20-of-32 passes for 151 yards against the Jets while tossing two TD’s and no interceptions and impressed head coach Bruce Allen.

“He was pretty calm,” Allen said. “And they threw a lot of different things at him, which we kind of expected that they would. I just think overall as a team we didn’t make enough plays to give ourselves an opportunity to win the game.”

The road team in this AFC rivalry is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings while the underdog has gone 6-2 ATS in the last eight matchups, making the Oakland Raiders the easy pick to win this contest.

My NFL Week 2 Upset Pick: Oakland Raiders +3 Points
