Will Betting On The St. Louis Rams In 2014 Payoff?

The St. Louis Rams will enter the 2014 NFL regular season looking to avoid their 10th consecutive season of missing out on the postseason while reaching eight wins or more for the first time since 2006.

Unfortunately, no matter how much the Rams improve, they’re going to be fighting an uphill battle simply because they reside in what I believe is the strongest division in the entire NFL.

Let’s take a look at the Rams and their upcoming 2014 campaign prospects.

Betting On The St. Louis Rams To Win the 2015 Super Bowl

Analysis: The St. Louis Rams are +5000 to win Super Bowl 49, but there’s a reason this team’s odds are so high and it’s not because oddsmakers have this floundering franchise pegged wrong.

While St. Louis (7-9 SU, 7-9 ATS, 9-7 O/U) finished a respectable 15th in total defense, including ninth against the run (102.9 ypg), the team’s mediocre offense left a lot to be desired after finishing the season ranked 27th in passing 9195.3 ypg) and 19th in rushing (109.5 ypg). The Rams also ranked 21st in scoring by putting up 21.8 points per game.

The Rams will once again turn to 2010 No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford hoping he can become the franchise quarterback he was expected to be when he was drafted four years ago.

Unfortunately, the 26-year-old Bradford has missed big parts of two seasons and may turn out to be a lot less spectacular than St. Louis envisioned when they drafted him. Bradford played all 16 games his rookie season but then missed six games in 2011 while regressing in a big way as he threw just six TD passes in those 10 starts. After playing in all 16 games in 2012, Bradford missed nine games this past season after tearing his ACL.

Now, no one quite knows how he will respond, but the Rams’ chances of success depend a lot on Bradford ‘s own personal success. If Bradford struggles or goes down with an injury again, the Rams will be forced to turn to mediocre backup Kellen Clemens and that’s just not going to cut it.

Save your money if you’re thinking about betting on the St. Louis Rams to cash in on their Super Bowl 49 Futures odds, because this teams isn’t winning it without several miracles.

Betting On The St. Louis Rams To Win the NFC West

  • St. Louis Rams +700
  • Seattle Seahawks +130
  • San Francisco 49ers +140
  • Arizona Cardinals +700

Analysis: Let me be honest for a minute ad simply admit that there is no way that St. Louis leapfrogs all three of their NFC West division rivals, who, by the way, all recorded double-digit win totals a year ago.

Before St. Louis can even begin to think about winning a division title, they really need to improve a passing attack that ranked 27th last season (195.3 ypg) and a rushing attack that wasn’t much better as they finished the 2013 regular season ranked 19th (109.5 ypg).

The Rams have recorded a pitiful 6-13-1 SU and respectable 9-11 ATS mark in their last 20 game against their division rivals so clearly, history says they will continue to struggle, particularly wit the improvements the Arizona Cardinals made in winning 10 games last season. St. Louis went 1-5 against its divisional counterparts last season and I believe they could again this year.

The Rams may be a whopping +700 to win the NFC West, but their return is so fantastic because it’s not going to happen.

Betting On The St. Louis Rams To Win In Week One

  • Minnesota at St. Louis -6
  • Over/Under 45

St. Louis is 6-4 SU and ATS in its last 10 home games but has won and covered the spread in each of its last three home games. The Rams are also a positive 3-2 SU and ATS in its L/5 home games against Minnesota .

Unfortunately, the Rams are also just 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games as a favorite of six points or less and a dismal 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS in its last five games against NFC North division opponents.

Despite their recent struggles, the Rams are in a better state than a rebuilding Minnesota Vikings team that went 5-10-1 last season. Minnesota will have a new head coach this season in widely respected former Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

I believe Zimmer is going to make a big difference for the Vikings this season and it starts in Week 1 as they pull off the ATS cover at the very least if not the outright road win. Minnesota is 5-5 ATS in its last 10 road games and I believe they’ll cash in right out of the gate in 2014.

My Pick: Minnesota +6 Points

St. Louis Rams Betting Tips

You’ve got to be careful when betting on the Rams as slight favorites or even big ones. St. Louis is just 3-7 SU and ATS in its last 10 games as a favorite of less than 2.0 points and just 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS in its L/10 games as a favorite between 6.0-and 8.0 points

I like St. Louis to hook up in low-scoring contests against Tampa Bay in Week 2, Frisco in Week 6, Seattle one week later. I also believe the Rams could end up in high-scoring affairs against Minnesota, Kansas City, Denver, San Diego, Oakland and Washington.

In the end…it looks like it could be another long season for head coach Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams, who, even if they improve vastly this coming season (and that’s a stretch) will still almost assuredly be looking up at Seattle, San Francisco and a resurgent Arizona Cardinals franchise.
