Is This The Year For The Cleveland Browns?

Should You Bet On Cleveland Browns In The 2014 NFL Season?

Should you bet on Cleveland Browns (4-12 SU, 6-10 ATS, 9-7 O/U) in the 2014 NFL Season?

That depends on who the Browns are playing – and where.

The Browns will enter the 2014 regular season looking to win more than five games for the first time since they racked up 10 wins back in 2007. Only time will tell whether they can or not, but one thing’s for sure, the Browns won’t be boring – especially if rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel is on the field.

Let’s explore what the Browns are facing as we move closer to the start of the 2014 NFL regular season.

Betting On the Cleveland Browns to Win Super Bowl 49

NFL Odds to win Super Bowl 49

Cleveland Browns +6600

Analysis: As young people say today…let me ‘keep it real’ by saying that there is no way that the Cleveland Browns win the 2015 Super Bowl to cash in on their season-long futures odds.

After winning either four of five games in each of the past six seasons, Cleveland is really trying to get to .500 this season – and that would represent a huge step forward in my mind.

The Browns haven’t won a championship since way back in 1964 – and they won’t win Super Bowl 49 either. Remember you have to get in the postseason in order to win it all – and the Browns aren’t ready for that kind of leap just yet.

My Pick: Save your NFL Futures Odds money

Betting On the Cleveland Browns to Win the AFC North

  • Cincinnati Bengals +185
  • Pittsburgh Steelers +225
  • Baltimore Ravens +240
  • Cleveland Browns +600

Analysis: Cleveland has finished in last place in the AFC North in three straight seasons and five of the last six overall. As a matter of fact, Cleveland hasn’t won a division crown since my man Bernie Kosar was leading them way back in 1989, so don’t expect any sort of miracle in 2014.

In the last 10 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have won the division four times, Baltimore has taken the crown three times and Cincinnati , twice. The rebuilding Browns are a long way from winning a division title if you ask me.

My Projected Order of Finish: Cincinnati , Baltimore , Pittsburgh , Cleveland

Betting On The Cleveland Browns To Win In Week One

  • Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers -5.5
  • Over/Under 40.5

Analysis: The Browns have lost 10 straight road games to Pittsburgh dating back to 2004 while going 3-7 ATS during the decade-long span.

The worst part is that the Browns haven’t even really had much of a chance of pulling off a road upset against their longtime rivals as they’ve been held to 10 points or less in four straight road games against Pittsburgh and five of the last six meetings in Steel Town overall.

While I’m a big fan of Johnny Manziel and believe he’s a Fran Tarkenton clone that is going to ultimately change the fortunes of the Browns franchise, this team certainly isn’t ready to take the next step in its evolution just yet as Manziel gets some on-the-job training in 2014. The elusive signal-caller recently took all reps with the team’s first string offense.

“We wanted to work them both in,” Pettine said of Manziel and veteran, Brian Hoyer, “and it’s part of our process.”

"It was just part of the plan that we’ve had,” Pettine added after Manziel replaced Hoyer with the starters. "We said we were going to allow the quarterbacks to compete. At some point you’ve got to mix up the supporting cast a little bit. It’s all part of it."

Keep it simple and play the Steelers to win and cover the spread with a bit of room to spare.

My Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers -5.5 Points

Cleveland Browns Betting Tips

Unless things change dramatically under first-year head coach Mike Pettine and eventually, Johnny Manziel, I say be very careful when wagering on the Browns when they’re playing at home. Cleveland is just 4-6 SU and ATS in its last 10 home games, including 0-3 SU and ATS in their last three.

Ironically, Cleveland has posted identical SU and ATS figures in its last 10 games as a favorite, so don’t think they’re going to win and cash in just because they’re favored.

If Cleveland is an underdog of more than eight points, simply bet them to lose the game straight-up against the Money Line. Cleveland is 0-10 SU in its last 10 such contests.

The Browns are just 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games against NFC South teams and a polar opposite 3-7 SU and 4-6 ATS in its last 10 games against AFC South teams as they get set to face both divisions in 2014.
