NHL Expert Picks Dec 18-24

2017 Pre-Christmas NHL Picks

The first game for my NHL Expert Picks this week is on Thursday, Dec. 21. Can Columbus take it to the defending Stanley Cup Champions on the road? On Friday, Philadelphia heads to Buffalo to battle the Sabres. Will Buffalo use home ice advantage to their benefit? The final game I like this week has Detroit battling Boston. Will it be the Red Wings or the Bruins who prevail at the TD Garden?

NHL Expert Picks Dec 18-24

Columbus at Pittsburgh
When:  Thursday, Dec. 21 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA

Analysis: These 2 haven’t battled since April 20. The Blue Jackets had no shot against the Penguins on that day. Pittsburgh dominated Columbus 5 to 2. Could Columbus turn the tables on the defending champs?

I believe they could. Columbus is one of the top teams in the Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets only have 12 losses this season compared to 20 wins. Although they must battle Boston and Toronto before taking on Pitt this Thursday, Columbus should manage to show their best.

I’ll take the Blue Jackets knowing that the price should be more than fair.

Pick: Columbus

Philadelphia at Buffalo
When:  Friday, Dec. 23 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: KeyBank Center, Buffalo, NY

Analysis: Philadelphia heads to Buffalo to battle the Sabres in TSN’s nationally broadcast game this Friday, Dec. 23. Heading into the week, the Flyers are one of the hottest teams in NHL. Heck, they might be the hottest team in NHL.

Philadelphia has won 6 straight. What’s impressive about the winning streak is that the Flyers haven’t allowed more than 2 goals in any one of the 6 games. Philly has beaten Edmonton by 2, Toronto by 2, and Vancouver by 3, during the winning streak.

Matches against the L.A. Kings and Detroit Red Wings before battling Buffalo could derail the streak. That’s okay by me. The odds are going to be better if Philly loses before facing the Sabres.

Pick: Philadelphia

Detroit at Boston
When:  Saturday, Dec. 23 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: TD Garden, Boston, MA

Analysis: Detroit could be tired by the time they face the Bruins this Saturday on Dec. 23. Detroit is at the New York Islanders and at Philadelphia before Saturday’s game at Boston. The Red Wings might not be in any shape to take down the Bruins.

Then again, Detroit will be the Boston Bruins fourth game this week. The Bruins battle Columbus on Monday, are at Buffalo on Tuesday, and then host Winnipeg on Thursday. Sure, Detroit’s week is tough.
Boston’s is brutal, though. I’ll go with the Red Wings.

Pick: Detroit
