NHL Best Bets Feature Explosive Caps, High-Scoring Pens & Battle-Tested Blackhawks

The explosive Washington Capitals, high-scoring Pittsburgh Penguins, and battle-hardened Chicago Blackhawks will all be in action as the NHL regular season resumes following the annual all-star contest. Better yet, you’re going to get a triple-play of expert NHL picks on all three teams as they look to put the pedal to the metal over the course of the second half of the regular season.

Let’s get started.

Explosive Capitals, High-Scoring Penguins and Experienced Blackhawks Highlight ‘Treyfecta’ of NHL Picks of the Week

Boston at Washington
When: Wednesday, February 1 at 8:00 PM ET
Where:  Verizon Center, Washington

Analysis: Boston (25-21-6) had won two straight at the time of this writing, but the Bruins had lost their previous four games and five of six overall while allowing four goals or more three times along the way.

On the flip side of the coin, Washington (33-10-6) had won four of five and eight of 10 heading into the weekend. More importantly, the Caps are ranked a stellar fifth in scoring (3.2 gpg) and phenomenal first in defense (2.1 gpg).

The Bruins rank an underwhelming 23rd in scoring (2.5 gpg) and average fewer points per game than they allow, despite ranking ninth in defense (2.6 gpg).

Washington beat Boston 4-3 in overtime t home the last time these two rivals met and they’ll win gain, but this time, it won’t go to OT and Washington will win by two goals at the very least.

Pick: Washington 4 Boston 2

Pittsburgh at St. Louis
When: Saturday, February 4 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: Scottrade Center, St. Louis, MO

Analysis: Heading into the weekend, Pittsburgh (30-13-5) had lost two straight, including  3-0 loss to St. Louis, but the Pens won their previous four matches. Conversely, St. Louis (24-20-5) had lost four of five heading into the weekend – with their only win coming against Pittsburgh during the stretch.

For this matchup, I’m going to advise you to simply back Pittsburgh to extract some revenge to get the solid road win, seeing as how Sidney Crosby and company rank first in scoring (3.5 gpg) compared to the Blues’ 11th-ranked offense (2.8 gpg) while also having the slightly better defense in allowing 2.9 goals per game to Pittsburgh’s 3.1 goals allowed per contest. Back the Penguins to get the road win by two goals to improve on their 10-10-3 road record.

Pick: Pittsburgh 5 St. Louis 3

Chicago at Dallas
When: Saturday, February 4 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX

Analysis: Heading into the weekend, the Chicago Blackhawks (30-16-5) had dropped two straight and four of seven while allowing an identical five goals in each of their last two losses while giving up five or more in three of their last four losses overall.

Dallas (20-20-10) managed to snap a three-game skid heading into the weekend by squeaking past Buffalo 4-3 on Thursday night, but the Stars are just 2-5 over their last seven games.

For this match, I’m going to advise you to back the Stars to get the home ‘upset’ over the experienced Blackhawks as they look to extract a small measure of revenge for their 3-1 home loss to their Western Conference rivals on December 11.

Chicago has compiled a solid 12-9-1 road mark this season, but the Stars have gone 13-7-6 at home and will have plenty of motivation to hold down the fort in this one.

Pick: Dallas 4 Chicago 3
