The 2018 Stanley Cup Betting Favorite: Tampa Bay Lightning 5/1
It sure doesn’t look like the Tampa Bay Lightning have any weaknesses. As of Dec. 26, Tampa Bay is a solid 26-7-1-1. The Lightning rank first in goals per match at 3.7. They also rank first in power play percentage at 26.2%. Defensively, Tampa’s almost just as good as they are offensively. The Lightning give up an average of 2.5 goals per match. That ranks third in NHL.
So, what’s the problem with betting on the current favorite to win the Stanley Cup? Nothing, really. However, betting on the favorite means that you’re taking the shortest odds on the chalk to win one of the most difficult trophies to acquire in all of team sports. Do you really want to do that? I know I don’t.
The Smart Pick To Win The Stanley Cup: Nashville Predators 8/1
The Predators are the current second choice to win the Stanley Cup. Nashville has a decent record. The Preds are 21-9-1-4. Nashville ranks in the Top 10 in both goals scored per match, and goals allowed per match. The Preds average 3.2 goals per. That ranks sixth in NHL. Nashville allows 2.7 goals per. That ranks eighth in NHL.
The real reason to like Nashville is because they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2017 Stanley Cup. Nashville has the experience to be awfully tough to knock out of the Western Conference Playoffs.
If the Preds can make the return trip to the Stanley Cup, they’ll be poised to win it. I like Nashville to get it done.
Longshot Pick To Win The Stanley Cup: St. Louis Blues 14/1
The Central Division is loaded. Not only are Nashville, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Dallas Stars in the division, so are the St. Louis Blues. Based on the overall record, the Blues lead the Central Division. As of Dec. 26, St. Louis has a 23-13-2-0 record. The Blues have lost 5 of their last 6 as of Dec. 26, but that doesn’t bother me.
This could be St. Louis’ season. The Blues defense has really come up huge this season. Although the offense only averages 2.9 goals per match, St. Louis makes up the lack of goals with shot pressure. The Blues average 33.3 shots per match. That ranks eighth in NHL.
14 to 1 odds on the Central Division leader aren’t bad odds at all. I think St. Louis is worth a look.
