NHL Picks Dec 17-23

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals
When: Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: The Pens are finally on track. Heading into their Dec. 17 game versus the Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh has won 3-of-4. The Pens lone loss was to Western Conference squad Chicago in the last 4.

When the Pens and Capitals met on Dec. 19, Washington won 2-1. Washington has an excellent home record 10-4-1-1. They also head into their game against the Pens on a 5-game win streak. But, Pittsburgh now has a winning road record at 6-5-2.

The Caps figure to be overplayed here. Most NHL bettors will back the Capitals simply because they’re the home team. That should make the Pens attractive on the moneyline. Pittsburgh’s the play.

Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins

L.A. Kings at San Jose Sharks
When: Saturday, Dec. 22 at 4:00 pm ET
Where: SAP Center, San Jose, CA
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: The Los Angeles Kings continue to struggle. The Kings were supposed to challenge in the Pacific Division. If anything L.A.’s defense was going to keep them in games. The defense allows over 3 goals per, meaning it’s as much of an Achilles heel as Los Angeles’ offense.

San Jose has been on a tear before their Dec. 18 matchup with Minnesota. The Sharks have gone 6-of-7 and are on a 4-game winning streak. The last time San Jose faced off against the Kings, they beat them 3-2 in overtime.

On Saturday, San Jose won’t need overtime. They’ll offer terrible odds on the moneyline, though. So, if you back the Sharks consider the puck line.

Pick: San Jose Sharks

New York Rangers at Toronto Maple Leafs
When: Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON, CA
TV: NHL

Analysis: It was only a couple weeks ago that the surprising New York Rangers appeared destined to make life tough on Washington, Pittsburgh, Columbus, and every other Metropolitan Division contender. Two weeks is an eternity in hockey, though. The Rangers have dropped 6 of their last 7 heading into their Dec. 18 match against Anaheim.

Toronto’s one of the best teams in NHL. Not only that, but the Maple Leafs blanked the Rangers 4-0 the last time they faced them. This definitely looks like a puck line play on the Leafs.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs
