NHL Best Bets Jan 23rd-Jan 29th

The NHL All-Star Game is this Sunday, Dec. 29 marking the half-way point of the hockey season. There are no games on Friday or Saturday, so my NHL best bets of the week are all mid-week. Let’s get started.

NHL Best Bets Jan 23rd-Jan 29th

Who wins at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when Toronto battles Detroit? What’s going to happen in a classic Eastern Conference throw down between the NY Rangers and Philadelphia at Madison Square Garden on Thursday? Also on Thursday, will Minnesota or St. Louis come up big in a nationally televised match up on NBC Sports Network?

Toronto at Detroit
When:  Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI
TV: TSN

Analysis: The last time that Toronto faced Detroit, the Maple Leafs won 5 to 4 in overtime. That match was earlier this month on January 1. The Leafs’ defense is a mess. Toronto makes up for their defensive issues via a strong offense.

Toronto averages over 3 goals per match. The Leafs’ average 32.7 shots per match. They convert on their power plays at 23.4%. That ranks the Leafs’ third in NHL in power play conversion percentage.

Detroit’s defense has been much better than Toronto’s in recent games. The Red Wings’ D has given up only 3 goals to Buffalo and 1 to NYR in OT in their last 2 games to start the week. That should give Detroit the advantage in this one.

I like Detroit to win straight up.

Pick: Detroit

Philadelphia at NY Rangers
When:  Thursday, Jan. 26 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: After losing 3 straight, the NY Rangers bounced back with two terrific wins to end last week. The Rangers beat Toronto 5 to 2 on Jan. 19. On Jan. 22, they beat Detroit in the game highlighted above.

The last time that NYR took on Philadelphia, they pummeled the Flyers for 5 goals in a 5 to 2 win. It’s hard to see a different outcome happening in this match on Thursday since NYR not only takes on Philly at home, but Henrik Lundqvist has been playing like he’s 25-years-old.

My gut, aka Miss Cleo, tells me that the Rangers win by at least 2 goals in this match.

Pick: New York Rangers puck line

St. Louis at Minnesota
When:  Thursday, Jan. 26 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: St. Louis travels to Minnesota for Thursday’s NBC Sports Net match. The Blues go into the week having lost 3 in a row and 5 out of their last 7. St. Louis is now 23-19-4-1, behind Nashville and Chicago in the Central Standings.

The team that leads the Central is Minnesota. The Wild has gone 6 and 1 straight up in their last 7 games. They appear ready to put a beating onto St. Louis in this match. Not only must the Blues battle Minnesota on the road on Thursday, but they also take on Stanley Cup defending champion Pittsburgh on the road on Jan. 24.

Minnesota has a shot to win this match by two goals.

Pick: Minnesota
