NHL Best Bets March 6th – 12th

This week, there are a lot of NHL games to choose from.  My best bets for this week’s of NHL action start in a Thursday matchup between Washington and San Jose. Is San Jose going to hold sway over one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference on their ice this Thursday night? Then, I like both nationally broadcast games this Sunday, March 12. Who wins when the 2 best teams in the Central Division, Chicago, and Minnesota, clash? Also on March 12, the Rangers take on the Red Wings. Will NYR send Detroit down for the count at Joe Louis Arena this Sunday?

NHL Best Bets March 6th – 12th

Washington at San Jose
When:  Thursday, March 9 at 10:30 pm ET
Where: SAP Center, San Jose, CA
TV: CSNB/CSNCAL

Analysis: With a 44-13-2-5 record as of March 5, the Caps are in first place in the Atlantic Division. San Jose, with a 38-18-6-1 record is atop the Pacific Division. Who wins on Thursday?

The Capitals play San Jose on the road before taking on Los Angeles and Anaheim in SoCal. Although the Caps figure to have some struggles versus both L.A. and Anaheim, it’s hard to see Washington having trouble versus San Jose. Washington is 17-8-24 on the road. They’ve won 5 out of their last 6 going into the week.

Not only that, but the Sharks battle Minnesota and Winnipeg on the road before taking on the Caps at home. Although the Sharks get 2-days to rest, it’s tough to see them playing at 100% versus a team that’s as talented, if not more so, than they are.

Pick: Washington

Minnesota at Chicago
When:  Sunday, March 12 at 12:30 pm ET
Where: United Center, Chicago, IL
TV: NBC

Analysis: Let’s look at the records first. As of March 4, Minnesota is 41-15-4-2. As of March 5, Chicago is 42-18-4-1. There’s a reason NBC has made Wild versus Blackhawks their Sunday battle. It should be the most entertaining game of the week.

Minnesota beat Chicago 3 to 2 on Jan. 15. That game took place at Chicago. The Blackhawks turned the tables on the Wild in a 4 to 3 overtime win at Minnesota on Feb. 8. Then, Chicago beat Minnesota 5 to 3 at Minnesota on Feb. 21.

I think Chicago has figured out how to beat the Wild. The Backhawks have improved each time against Minnesota this season. There’s no reason to believe that Chicago doesn’t beat Minnesota on Sunday, March 12.

Pick: Chicago

NY Rangers at Detroit
When:  Sunday, March 12 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI
TV: NBCSN

Analysis: The Red Wings are at the bottom in the Atlantic Standings. NYR is in fourth place in the Metropolitan Standings. On paper, it looks like NYR is going to drop Detroit nasty-like at Joe Louis Arena.

But, the Rangers are cold going into the week. NYR has gone 1 and 3 straight up in their last 4 matches. That’s not the only issue. By the time NYR battles Detroit, they will have played Tampa Bay, Florida, and Carolina on the road.

All 3 of those teams should be tough for the Rangers to get past. I just don’t see how NYR, a veteran squad, is going to perform against Detroit on the road. I’m backing Detroit at what should be nice home dog odds.

Pick: Detroit
