Updated 2014 Stanley Cup Playoff PicksNoah Williams
We’re about halfway through the first round, so now is as good a time as any to hand out my updated 2014 Stanley Cup Playoff picks. Below are the top 5 teams ranked by the odds the linemakers have given them. Some are good bets, others aren’t at all.
Updated 2014 Stanley Cup Playoff Picks
The Boston Bruins are +200 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup
The odds on Boston have been falling…and falling…and falling some more throughout the first round of the playoffs. They have a slim 3-1 SU lead over the tough Red Wings as of right now, but almost everyone expects them to win the championship in consensus updated 2014 Stanley Cup playoff picks. That’s all fair. Boston is the most dominant force in the NHL right now. You want proof? Look at how far ahead they are in the NHL futures market of the other teams in their conference.
The San Jose Sharks are at +400 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup
The Sharks are probably the worst bet you can make if history means anything to you. They’ve ben around since 1991 and have been a perennial powerhouse and stingy constant in the playoffs. But they’ve also never been to a Stanley Cup Finals. They own a 3-1 SU lead over the Los Angeles Kings right now, and seem like shoe-ins to advance, but the Sharks will sink sooner or later and you don’t want your money capsized alongside them when that happens.
The Chicago Blackhawks are +750 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup and St. Louis Blues are +800 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup
Whichever team wins this series is going to represent the Western Conference in the finals. That’s my hot take. Right now, this has been a home team series with both squads picking up wins whenever they serve as hosts.
Updated 2014 Stanley Cup Playoff picks have seen a mild bump in both of their long term numbers and you really just have to pick whomever you prefer. Personally I still love the Blues at 8-to-1 to win it all. I’ll be fine making the wrong decision in this series because there is no dumb call when it comes to these two teams.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are +750 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup
Honestly, I still don’t totally trust the Penguins. They’re struggling against the Blue Jackets and are in danger of being turned upside down yet again in the playoffs. They just don’t have the feeling of a rigid playoff beast. I’d much rather take the Montreal Canadians at 10-to-1 in my updated 2014 Stanley Cup playoff picks then hope that Pittsburgh fails to avoid another post season implosion.
The Anaheim Ducks are +1000 to win the 2014 Stanley Cup
Anyone who has experienced a Bruce Boudreau playoff team knows there’s a lot of things to hate about the guy (just ask a Caps fan). The fact that he’s scratching Teemu Selanne for Game 4 tells me everything I need to know. Boudreau is panicking and that doesn’t bode well for the Ducks, who are caught in an expected 2-2 SU tie with the eighth seeded Dallas Stars. A lot of people didn’t back the Ducks to go all the way, and I would shade away from them if you haven’t already done so. If you need a good catch-up play on a team with longer odds, the Colorado Avalanche are gaining steam in updated 2014 Stanley Cup playoff picks at +1200.
