Japan Will Win the Women’s World Cup If
They can break down USA’s solid defense
Aya Miyama for Japan is known as one of the top strikers in the women’s game. She is the only Japanese player that has scored twice during the 2015 Women’s World Cup. Is that a knock against Miyama? Absolutely not. If anything, it points to the strength of the Japanese attack.

Japan has scored 8 of their own goals in this tournament. 8 of those goals have been scored by 7 different players. That’s a balanced attack. But, the attack didn’t look very sharp versus England. Without the own goal by English player Laura Bassett, Japan might not even be in the Championship Game. The Japanese will have to find a way to break down a U.S. defense that has allowed only a single goal during the tournament. They can do that by working to get Miyama open and preventing the U.S. from marking her with 2 players. Japan can a 2 player marking on Miyama by pushing the ball to their other offensive players early on in the match.
USA Will Win the Women’s World Cup If
Lloyd and Morgan and play a striking one-two game in the first half
USA’s Alex Morgan looks to be in excellent form. She scored the winning goal versus Colombia in the Round of 16 and drew the penalty for the goal versus Germany in the semifinal game. Carli Lloyd looks to be in excellent form as well. She made a beautiful pass in the second half of the game versus Germany to Kelley O’Hara that sealed the deal.

If Morgan and Lloyd bring the same form into the Championship Game as they did against Germany, Japan could be in some trouble. Japan allowed England to work for plenty of chances during their semifinal match. The English probably should have had a 2 to 1 lead before the Bassett goal. Lloyd continually found open spaces in the German defense. A lot of it had to do with USA’s excellent defense forcing the Germans to play on their half much more than they would have liked, but that should be the case against Japan on Sunday. Unless Lloyd and Morgan aren’t at their best, it’s difficult to see USA losing this match.

To quote Yogi Berra “It’s like déjà vu all over again.”
The United States and Japan meet in the Women’s World Cup final for the second straight time and that’s not including their 2012 Olympic match. Bet on team USA to beat Japan.
