UEFA EURO 2016 Expert Picks

UEFA EURO 2016 Expert Picks

A week after the 2016 Copa America Centenario kicked off the remaining soccer super powers will face-off in the EUFA Euro 2016. The month long tournament, from June 10 to runs through July 10, will crown the European Champion going into the 2018 World Cup.

The UEFA Euro Tournament has been held every 4 years since 1960. Often times a single nation, like what usually happens for Copa America, hosts the tournament. In 2016 the host nation is France. France is also one of the favorites to take home the EUFA Euro Trophy. The other favorite is Germany. Keep reading to find out more about both France and Germany as well as my smart bet and longshot bet for UEFA Euro 2016!

The Favorite To Win UEFA EURO 2016: Germany 3/1, France 3/1

France is one of the favorites because they are the host country. France hosted the very first EUFA Euro in 1960. They finished fourth. The Soviet Union won it in 1960. But in 1984, the only other time outside of 2016 where France has hosted the tournament, the French beat Spain 2 to 0 in the title game. Will history repeat itself for France? The French do have a deep team led by Arsenal star Olivier Giroud, but they haven’t had an impact in international tournaments since finishing second to Italy at the 2006 World Cup.

Germany goes into UEFA Euro 2016 having won the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. The Germans are, as always, loaded at every position. Goalie Manuel Neuer, defender Jerome Boateng, midfielders Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger and forward Thomas Mueller lead a team that figures to be ultra-tough at UEFA EURO 2016. Germany is the preferred favorite to back if you’re going chalky.

The Smart Pick To Win UEFA EURO 2016: Spain 11/2

Spain won the last 2 UEFA EURO Championships in 2008 and 2012. In fact, the Spaniards dominated international play up until the 2014 World Cup where, inexplicably, they failed to make it out of the Group Stage. No worries. This Spanish squad has reloaded from 2 years ago by adding young players like Koke and Thiago Alcantara to veterans like goalkeeper Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos. I just don’t see how the Spaniards don’t make an impact at UEFA Euro 2016. This is especially true considering the failure at the World Cup in 2014.

The Longshot Pick UEFA EURO 2016: Portugal 20/1

Arguably the most popular athlete on the planet, Christiano Ronaldo has failed on the biggest international stages. He was terrible during the 2014 World Cup. UEFA EURO 2016 is a chance for Ronaldo to make amends. He has a nice supporting cast around him in players like Pepe and Andre Gomes. If Ronaldo comes up big, Portugal could make waves and 20 to 1 is a fair price. If Ronaldo fails again, well, that’s the expectation, isn’t it?  So, I think that he’ll play much more relaxed at UEFA EURO 2016 than he did at the last World Cup.
