Can Serena Williams Beat Maria Sharapova in the 2015 Wimbledon Semis?
Serena wins if she continues playing her game.
If Serena shows up and plays like only Serena knows how to play, Sharapova is going to be in for a short, but devastatingly difficult, afternoon. Serena Williams has dominated Sharapova in the past.
The world’s number one ranked women’s tennis player has beaten Maria Sharapova 16 straight times. The worst part for Maria is that she’s only faced Serena Williams 19 times. Betting on Serena to beat Sharapova is like betting on the 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament to beat the 16 seed on the moneyline. When Serena is at her best, Sharapova simply cannot beat her. It took Serena straight sets to win 13 of the 16 victories. What might be worse for Sharapova in this Thursday semifinal is that Serena appears to have had her bad match.
Williams lost the first set versus 24 ranked Victoria Azarenka by a 3 to 6 score. It looked like Serena might be in serious trouble of being upset, but then the real Serena started playing and she beat Azarenka 6-2 and 6-3. If Serena got the bad play out of her system, she should have no trouble taking down Sharapova on Thursday. Williams is fighting for her twenty-first Grand Slam title. Unless she’s off her game, she’ll take one step closer versus Maria Sharapova on Thursday.
Can Maria Sharapova beat Serena Williams in the 2015 Wimbledon Semis?
Sharapova can play the tennis match of her life.
It’s true that Maria Sharapova has been playing Serena Williams tougher lately. She lost the Australian Open Final to Serena by a 6-3, 7-6 (5) score. She lost to Serena in a 2014 match in Brisbane 6-2, 7-6 (7) and in the 2013 French Open Final, Sharapova lost 6-4, 6-4. It’s also true that Maria Sharapova has played Serena Williams tough at Wimbledon.
But, the fact remains that in their head to head matchups, Serena has dominated Maria Sharapova. Overall, Sharapova is 2 and 17 versus Serena Williams. During the 16 match win streak, Serena has won 10 of the 32 sets by 6-0 or 6-1. That’s utter domination. As good as Maria Sharapova is, and she is the second best women’s tennis player in the world, she’s going to have to do much better than just play better than she usually does in order to get to a third set. Maria Sharapova is going to have to play the tennis match of her life.
That, of course, depends on whether or not Serena brings her ‘A’ Game. If Serena isn’t on top of her game, Sharapova will have a shot. But, is that a good enough reason to bet on Maria Sharapova to pull off the upset. Not from our point-of-view. Serena should dominate again.
