Women’s French Open Tennis Odds & Picks

With Serena Williams enjoying the life of an expectant mother, the French Open Women’s Tennis Tournament is anyone’s game. The French Open takes place from May 22 through June 11. Due to Serena’s absence, Simona Halep has been installed as the 4 to 1 favorite. By no means is Halep a sure thing. Although watching Serena play tennis has been great, there’s no doubt that her absence makes the Women’s Singles Tournament at Roland-Garros more exciting this year than it has been in many years.

Below, I write more about Miss Halep. Who do you think I like as my smart pick, and longshot pick on the women’s side? Keep reading to find out!

The Odds-On Favorite To Win The 2017 French Open: Simona Halep +400

Halep is an excellent clay player. She won the Madrid Open on clay a couple of weeks ago. But, in Rome, things didn’t go as planned. Halep played well, unfortunately, because she hurt herself during the tournament, Elena Svitolina upset Halep in the finals at Rome 6-4, 5-7, 1-6. Can Halep turn it around at Roland-Garros?

I believe she could. I have nothing against those who want to take a shot on Halep at 4 to 1. After all, she had won 26 of 30 matches over clay before losing to Svitolina in the finals at Rome. If she’s okay physically, she has a better than 4 to 1 shot to win the French Open.

But, just in case she isn’t, I’ve chosen a smart and longshot play to win the Women’s Singles Title.

The Smart Bet To Win The 2017 French Open: Elina Svitolina +1400

The 22-year-old from Odessa, Ukraine, is ranked eleventh in the world. All she needs is to win a major championship to jump up in the rankings. She reached the quarterfinals at the French Open in 2015. I think she’s got a much better shot to win the French Open in 2017 than the 14 to 1 odds imply.

Svitolina has already won 3 singles tournaments this year. Her wins-losses record is a sterling 26 and 6. Not only that, but Svitlona is on fire. She beat 2 Karolina Pliskova, 3 Garbine Muguruza, and 6 Simona Halep to win in Rome. Svitolina is the smart bet going to Roland-Garros.

The Longshot Pick To Win The 2017 French Open: Karolina Pliskova +1600

Due to her loss to Svitolina, Pliskova has fallen to 3 after being ranked 2. Serena has fallen to 2 while Angelique Kerber has risen to 1. Not that rankings matter. Kerber hasn’t won a singles tournament this year while Pliskova has 2 singles tournament wins on her resume.

Pliskova’s best finish at the French Open was Round 3. But, Serena’s pregnancy has left the door wide-open for many players to go further at Roland-Garros than they have in any other year. I like Pliskova to make her presence felt.
