What is the outlook for Ghana?

If the United States loses to Germany, Ghana would qualify instead of the U.S. if either match is decided by a margin of two goals or more. If the U.S. loses by one goal, Ghana would need to win by at least two goals or be involved in a higher-scoring one-goal win.

For example, a 1-0 score in both matches would allow the United States to advance on head-to-head. But, if the U.S. loses 1-0 to Germany, then Ghana would need to win 2-1 to qualify on goals scored.

What is the outlook for Portugal?

To advance ahead of the U.S., Portugal will need a goal-difference swing of five (head-to-head is level). For example, Portugal would need to win 3-0 and the American men to fall 2-0 or ay other equivalent 5-goal scorelines. The teams will draw lots if goal difference is identical (this scenario would play out with a 3-0 U.S. defeat and a 2-0 Portugal win, for example).

Okay, getting on to this match…first let me say that I believe it’s another absolute thriller just waiting to happen between two very evenly matched teams.

Portugal got overwhelmed in its 4-0 opening match shutout against Thomas Muller and Germany to kick off their 2014 World Cup. Despite having arguably the world’s best player on their roster in superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. the Portuguese men needed a miraculous match-tying goal from Silvestre Varela against the U.S. on Sunday in order to avoid their second consecutive defeat and ensuing dismissal from the 2014 World Cup.

Ghana on the other hand, has looked very good during their two-match stint in the 2014 World Cup, even in falling to the U.S. 2-1 in their opening round match. Ghana played powerful Germany to a fantastic 2-2 draw on Sunday in what many believe to be the best match of the 2014 World Cup to date.

I love Ghana’s most active trio of players, forwards Asamoah Gyan and Kevin-Prince Boateng and midfielder André Ayew and I believe that Ghana can win this match against an underachieving Portugal team that should be 0-2 right now.

My Pick: Ghana 2-1
